Sudan: Arrests and Violence

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what assessment he has made of the (a) level of violence and (b) number of arrests currently occurring in Sudan.

Answer: Reports of the number of detainees, deaths and injuries vary and are difficult to confirm. The UK remains deeply concerned by the level of violence used by the Government of Sudan to disperse peaceful protests, and that political activists, human rights defenders, journalists and others are being detained without charge or trial. We continue to urge the Government of Sudan at the highest levels to respect the Sudanese people's right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and have called for all detainees to be treated in accordance with international standards and afforded their full legal rights guaranteed in Sudanese law.
