Euthanasia: Internet

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps his Department is taking to ensure mental health professionals are (a) informed about and (b) equipped to deal with the potential harms of (a) euthanasia websites and (b) similar online media on vulnerable people under their care.

Answer

It is the responsibility of individual employers to ensure that their employees are appropriately trained and competent to carry out their duties. Individual regulated healthcare professionals also need to undertake continuous professional development in order to maintain their registration.

The Online Harms White Paper will make the internet safer for everyone. The Department will continue to work with social media companies to address wider issues of the impact of the internet on mental health and wellbeing.
