Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood: Research

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, whether her Department (a) has taken and (b) is taking steps to increase research into the causes of sudden unexplained death in childhood.

Answer

The Department funds research through the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). This includes funding for the NIHR’s Great Ormond Street Hospital Biomedical Research Centre, which has carried out a study on sudden unexplained death in childhood, titled Autopsy Investigation of Sudden Unexpected Death in Childhood.

While it is not usual practice to ring-fence funds for particular topics or conditions, the NIHR welcomes funding applications for research into any aspect of human health, including sudden unexplained death in childhood. Applications are subject to peer review and judged in open competition, with awards being made on the basis of the importance of the topic to patients, health and care services, value for money, and scientific quality.
