Disabled Facilities Grants
- Question
-
To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, what assessment he has made of the adequacy of the level of support provided through Disabled Facilities Grants for families whose housing adaptation plans exceed their available funding; and if the Department will take steps to ensure housing associations meet commitments made to tenants regarding disability adaptations without requiring repeated reassessment processes.
- Answer
-
The Government recognises how important home adaptations are in enabling disabled people to live as independently as possible, in a safe and suitable environment. To support this, the Government paid out £723 million for the Disabled Facilities Grant for 2026-27, an increase of £12 million on 2024–25 core funding.
The current maximum for an individual Disabled Facilities Grant application is £30,000. The Government has reviewed this limit and is considering the right approach for the future. Where the cost of adaptations is higher, local authorities can take a local decision to provide grants above the existing £30,000 limit on a case-by-case basis, in line with a locally published Housing Assistance Policy. Local authorities can also choose to waive the means test in particular circumstances, if they set this out clearly in a local housing assistance policy.
Under the Equality Act 2010 landlords, including housing associations, cannot unreasonably withhold their consent to an adaptation or attach unreasonable conditions to any consent.
