Written question asked by Perran Moon (Labour) on Friday, 28 August 2026, in the House of Commons. It was due for an answer on Wednesday, 2 September 2026. It was answered by Stephanie Peacock (Labour) on Monday, 28 September 2026 on behalf of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

Cornish Language

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, if her Department will consider establishing a statutory Cornish Language Commissioner with responsibility for advising on, developing and monitoring a formal Cornish Language Development Plan.

Answer

DCMS does not currently have plans to establish a statutory Cornish Language Commissioner.

Consistent with the Government’s ambitious devolution agenda and its belief that local communities are best placed to identify and deliver the support needed in their areas, Cornwall Council, with the support of UK Government, is leading efforts to strengthen and promote the Cornish language. This locally led approach ensures that measures are tailored to Cornwall’s unique cultural and linguistic heritage, while enabling the language to flourish for future generations.
