History: Secondary Education

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Education, if she will make it her policy following the recent Curriculum and Assessment Review to include the British Empire and colonialism as statutory content in Key Stage 3 History.

Answer

The key stage 3 history curriculum includes the statutory theme, “ideas, political power, industry and empire: Britain, 1745-1901” through which pupils may study the British empire and colonialism. The flexibility of the history curriculum also allows schools to teach these topics, where relevant, across the 3 key stages.

As we reform the curriculum following the Curriculum and Assessment Review, we are clear that all pupils should develop a robust understanding of our nation’s history.
