Football: Finance
- Question
-
To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, what steps she is taking to ensure that football clubs remain financially viable while protecting the interests of supporters.
- Answer
-
Football clubs are the beating hearts of local communities and we set up the Independent Football Regulator to safeguard their heritage and promote financial sustainability. This includes the ability to remove unsuitable owners who are causing harm to a club, ensuring that clubs and its fans are protected from bad ownership.
The IFR’s unprecedented State of the Game report vividly demonstrates the financial challenges that clubs face and why a financial regulator is needed.
The Regulator’s licensing regime will guide clubs to a more secure financial footing and give confidence to all supporters. As part of the IFR’s licensing regime, which all regulated clubs will need to abide by to play in specified competitions, clubs will have to involve their fans in a meaningful way before they make decisions.
