The NHS Federated Data Platform (NHS FDP) safely connects information across the National Health Service into a single, secure environment. This gives National Health Service staff the ability to better co-ordinate care, and deliver benefits including managing theatre time better, improving the speed of a cancer diagnosis, or allowing patients to be discharged quicker from hospital.

To date, 24 integrated care board clusters and 168 NHS trusts have signed up to the NHS FDP, including the University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust. NHS England publishes quarterly information on the benefits realised at the following link:

As part of ongoing and regular contract reviews of the NHS FDP contract, consideration is given as to how benefits and outcomes are protected, whether or not there is an extension. In the event of the contract ending, Exit Management provisions would take effect. As with any change programme there are many aspects that require planning and resource, including delivery of associated procurement activity, mobilising the replacement, supporting users, and managing exit from existing contracts.

The contract has measures to facilitate exit and transition, including intellectual property rights in NHS build products or components. In addition, the contract includes controls to support transition and continuity of services in the event of termination, ensuring that operational delivery and patient services are protected.

In line with Government commercial function standards and contract management best practice, we shall be reviewing the NHS FDP contract with a decision anticipated to be made this year on extension.

Any decision to end or vary the contract would be taken in accordance with the agreed contractual terms, public procurement regulations, and Government commercial standards. This would include careful consideration of safeguarding NHS data, maintaining operational continuity, securing value for money, and upholding public trust.

The NHS FDP is, and will continue to be, an important component of delivering patient care in the NHS in England. In principle, another supplier could provide equivalent functionality in the future. It would take planning, time, and resources to run a compliant procurement and then move services and data across safely.
