Democratic Republic of the Congo: Human Rights

Question

To ask His Majesty's Government, further to the Written Answer by Lord Collins of Highbury on 12 May 2025 (HL6924), what steps they have taken to ensure those who committed human rights violations and abuses in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are held to account.

Answer

The UK Government is committed to ensuring that those responsible for human rights violations and abuses in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are held to account. We use diplomatic engagement at senior levels, including through Ministers and our Embassy in Kinshasa, to press the Government of the DRC and other actors to investigate allegations of abuses and hold perpetrators accountable, including members of the security forces. We also work in the United Nations and other multilateral fora to promote accountability and raise human rights concerns, and support the UN Joint Human Rights Office to monitor violations, document abuses and strengthen accountability.
