Myanmar: Rohingya

Question

To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of reports that since May around 300 Rohingya have been conscripted by the government of Myanmar for use as forced labour and are being used to construct resettlement sites for incoming ethnic Rakhine families on seized, confiscated, Rohingya land in northern Maungdaw; and how have they responded.

Answer

The UK continues to condemn airstrikes by the Myanmar military against civilian targets, as I set out in my answer to the Noble Lord on 10 April (HL15957), and we also condemn the ongoing persecution of Rohingya Muslims in the country, including reports of their use as forced labour. We will continue to use our pen-holder role at the UN to shine a spotlight on these violations of international humanitarian law.
