Question

To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the extent to which all 15 recommendations of the report of the Paterson Inquiry, published in 2020, have been applied consistently across (1) the independent healthcare sector, and (2) the NHS; and whether they intend to publish a further response implementation update.

Answer

The Government has assessed progress against 13 of the 15 recommendations it accepted of the 2020 Paterson Inquiry through its published response in December 2021 and a 12‑month implementation update in December 2022.

These assessments found that nine of the recommendations have been implemented or partially implemented and four recommendations are in progress, with action taken across both the National Health Service and the independent sector to strengthen clinical governance, oversight of consultants, and patient safety. Implementation has been delivered collaboratively with system partners, including regulators and providers in both sectors, to support greater consistency.

The Government is keeping the need for further formal updates under review.
