To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills what recent research his Department has conducted into the relationship between workplace well-being and productivity.

In October 2012 BIS published a study, ‘Promoting High Performance Working’, which assessed the prevalence of high performance working practices and the factors that influence their use in small and medium-sized enterprises. The presence of high performance work practices is associated with improved business performance and contributes to well-being; employees report higher job satisfaction, motivation, involvement and commitment. More information about high performance working can be found on the UK Commission for Employment and Skills' (UKCES) website.
BIS has also published a series of Work-Life Balance Surveys which look at issues including working hours, the provision and take-up of flexible working arrangements, and employee attitudes to work-life balance.
