Privy Counsellors

Question

To ask Her Majesty’s Government who invites Privy Counsellors to attend Privy Council meetings; and by what authority.[HL2603]

Answer

The Privy Council Office provides the Secretariat to the Privy Council and is responsible for arranging the quorum for each meeting. By custom and convention, only serving government Ministers are invited to attend Privy Council meetings. There are, however, two occasions on which the whole Privy Council is summonsed to attend: on the announcement of a reigning Sovereign’s intention to marry; and to an Accession Council following the death of a Sovereign.
