The Defence Board receives a monthly report on the performance of each of its Top level Budgets showing the forecast position against the allocated budget. It also receives information on the delivery of the Ministry of Defence’s key equipment and other projects. The Board assesses this management information at each meeting and takes action as and when necessary.

The Ministry of Defence conducts a wide range of surveys, including the Armed Forces Continuous Attitude Survey, the tri-service Families Continuous Attitude Survey, and the 'Your Say' survey for civilian staff.
The Defence Board does not routinely commission surveys but considers information derived from them where pertinent to the effective management of the Department.

Details of those who support the Permanent Secretary for more then 50% of their week, and their job titles, could only be provided at disproportionate cost.

The Ministry of Defence has a wide range of responsibilities, and the Defence Board uses a comprehensive set of information to monitor and manage performance on a regular basis. In summary, these cover the current defence priorities:
To succeed in Afghanistan.
To continue to fulfil our standing commitments.
To succeed in other operations we are required to undertake.
To transform defence by: restructuring the Armed Forces and their capabilities; implementing the new Defence Operating Model; and delivering Defence in the most effective, efficient and sustainable way.
