The main agency through which the Government supports medical and clinical research is the Medical Research Council (MRC). The MRC is an independent body funded by the Department of Trade and Industry via the Office of Science and Technology.The MRC does not normally allocate funds to particular topics: research proposals in all areas compete for the funding available. When appropriate, high quality research in particular areas of strategic importance may be given priority in competition for funds, but research excellence and importance to health continues to be the primary considerations in funding decisions. The MRC always welcomes high quality applications for support into any aspect of human health and these are judged in open competition with other demands on funding.I have received several representations from hon. and right hon. Members about research funding for chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME). I have also received many representations from members of the public and stakeholders with an interest in CFS/ME.

We have made no assessments of the economic effects of early diagnosis and treatment for those with myalgic encephalomyelitis.All health professionals recognise the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, indeed this is a key feature of the national service framework for long-term conditions. However, some neurological conditions, such as myalgic encephalomyelitis, can present a particular challenge for early identification as they lack clear, simple diagnostic features. Such conditions will require further investigations and clinical tests before a final diagnosis is made.

Since the announcement of the 8.5 million budget for developing new services for those with chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME), we have established 13 clinical network co-ordinating centres, 36 local multi-disciplinary teams, as well as 11 specialist children and young people's teams distributed across England. These new centres have been created to provide services for those with CFS/ME where there was no existing provision, each centre covers up to eight primary care trusts.The latest figures show that 8,646 adults and 439 children and young adults have been seen. The new centres are expected to see 21,000 patients annually when working at full capacity.Applications for funding to establish CFS/ME services were assessed by an investment steering group consisting of health professionals, as well as patient and carer representatives. The criteria used by the steering group included strategy and partnership working, the proposed service organisation and staffing structure, as well as the need to ensure an even geographic distribution of centres.Future funding of CFS/ME services will be included within the resource allocations to primary care trusts to facilitate the continuation of the service once the ring-fenced period ends. CFS/ME services will therefore be considered as part of the future local planning of services.National Health Service organisations are expected to demonstrate that they are making progress towards achieving the level of service quality described in the national service framework (NSF) for long-term conditions. The NSF sets out a clear vision of how health and social care organisations can improve the quality, consistency and responsiveness of their services and help improve the lives of people with neurological conditions, including CFS/ME. The Chorley and South Ribble primary care trust is the lead commissioning organisation for a new chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) service for Lancashire and South Cumbria. This has been recently launched and is expected to be fully operational by January 2006.A specialist multi-disciplinary team, comprising consultant, physiotherapist, nurse and technical instructor, is providing a service for people with CFS or myalgic encephalomyelitis across the geographical area of Lancashire and South Cumbria.

In May 2003, the Medical Research Council (MRC) announced funding for a major trial into various treatment options for those with myalgic encephalomyelitis. Known as PACE—pacing, activity and cognitive behavioural therapy: a randomised evaluation—this trial is ongoing.The main agency through which the Government supports medical and clinical research is the Medical Research Council (MRC). The MRC is an independent body, funded by the Department of Trade and Industry via the Office of Science and Technology. The MRC is currently funding two complementary trials into various treatment options for chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) that aim to improve quality of life for those who are ill. The Department is meeting part of the cost of the trials, to which in total £4.2 million has been allocated. Patient recruitment began toward the end of last year.Over 75 per cent. of the Department's total expenditure on health research is, however, devolved to and managed by national health service organisations. Details of individual projects, including some concerned with myalgic encephalomyelitis, can be found on the national research register on the Department's website at www.dh.gov.uk/research.

In May 2003, the Medical Research Council (MRC) announced funding for a major trial into various treatment options for those with myalgic encephalomyelitis. Known as PACE—pacing, activity and cognitive behavioural therapy: a randomised evaluation—this trial is ongoing.The main agency through which the Government supports medical and clinical research is the Medical Research Council (MRC). The MRC is an independent body, funded by the Department of Trade and Industry via the Office of Science and Technology. The MRC is currently funding two complementary trials into various treatment options for chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) that aim to improve quality of life for those who are ill. The Department is meeting part of the cost of the trials, to which in total £4.2 million has been allocated. Patient recruitment began toward the end of last year.Over 75 per cent. of the Department's total expenditure on health research is, however, devolved to and managed by national health service organisations. Details of individual projects, including some concerned with myalgic encephalomyelitis, can be found on the national research register on the Department's website at www.dh.gov.uk/research.

The project funded by the national health service health technology assessment programme, "Cognitive behavioural therapy in chronic fatigue syndrome: a randomised controlled trial of an outpatient group programme", for which the grant holder is the North Bristol NHS trust, has been allocated a total of £75,432.

The main agency through which the Government supports medical and clinical research is the Medical Research Council (MRC). The MRC is an independent body, funded by the Department of Trade and Industry via the Office of Science and Technology.
The MRC does not normally allocate funds to particular topics: research proposals in all areas compete for the funding available. When appropriate, high quality research in particular areas of strategic importance may be given priority in competition for funds, but research excellence and importance to health continues to be the primary considerations in funding decisions. The MRC always welcomes high quality applications for support into any aspect of human health and these are judged in open competition with other demands on funding.
The MRC is currently funding two complementary trials into various treatment options for chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) that aim to improve quality of life for those who are ill. The Department is meeting part of the cost of the trials, to which £4.2 million in total has been allocated. Patient recruitment began toward the end of last year.
Since 1998, the Department has separately commissioned and funded a number of small scale research projects related to aspects of CFS/ME at a total cost of £293,000.
Over 75 per cent. of the Department's total expenditure on health research is, however, devolved to and managed by national health service organisations. Details of individual projects, including some concerned with myalgic encephalomyelitis, can be found on the national research register at www.dh.gov.uk/research

Medical opinion differs on the most effective treatment for sufferers of chronic fatigue syndrome or myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME). In recognition of this, in 2004 the Department asked the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to produce clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and management of CFS/ME. This work is expected to be published in 2007. The national health service is able to provide treatment for the range problematic symptoms often associated with this condition—for example sleep disorders, pain, anxiety, depression and stomach disorders.
The three main treatments provided by the NHS specifically for CFS/ME are:
Pacing—learning to effectively manage activity and energy levels.
Graded activity—gradual but progressive increases in aerobic exercise.
Cognitive behavioural therapy—helping recognise and change behaviours and beliefs which can impact on the illness.
Data on the incidence and treatment rates of specific medical conditions such as CFS/ME are not collected by the Department. However, it is estimated that around 240,000 people in the United Kingdom suffer from CFS/ME.
Local health professionals in primary care trusts (PCTs) are responsible for determining which health services their local populations require and ensuring the provision of these services. It is, therefore, the responsibility of individual PCTs to decide the level of funding they allocate to services for CFS/ME. However, in May 2003, the Department announced that additional funding of £8.5 million would be made available for services specifically designed for people with CFS/ME. This money will help develop clinical services where none currently exist, including 12 new centres and 28 local support teams solely for CFS/ME sufferers.
