To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, how his Department plans to allocate the two million pounds for assessing options for horizontal spaceports in the UK.
As part of Farnborough International Airshow on 15th August 2018, the UK Space Agency announced £2m of funding in support of horizontal spaceflight and spaceports, to further accelerate this early-stage market. The UK Space Agency is working closely with colleagues from several government departments, including the Scotland Office, to finalise the details of this scheme.
We must, of course, ensure that any use of public funds provides value for money and will benefit the UK. We plan to make further announcements, subject to business case, later in 2018.

Our Industrial Strategy recognises the role of new markets like space launch in driving growth across the UK. The Government is delivering a major programme to enable companies to offer small satellite launch and sub-orbital spaceflight from UK spaceports.
The UK Space Agency has considered 26 proposals for grant funding to kick-start satellite launch and spaceflight operations in the UK.
On Monday we announced £31.5 million in funding to enable satellites to be launched from Sutherland, Scotland, which aims to be the first vertical spaceport to launch satellites into space from mainland Europe.
Alongside this, we have also announced plans, subject to business case, for up to £2 million of funding for airports such as Newquay, Glasgow Prestwick and Snowdonia planning to build the market for horizontal spaceflight using air-launched rockets and sub-orbital spaceplanes.

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State has received a recent update about Cornwall Newquay Airport’s plans to build a spaceport. We welcome the strong Cornish interest in the space sector, and the region’s recently announced Space Action Plan. Organisations like the South West Satellite Catapult Centre of Excellence and Goonhilly Earth Station will enable Cornwall to play a part in the new commercial space age.
Our Industrial Strategy recognises the role of new markets like space launch in driving growth across the UK. The UK Space Agency is delivering a major programme to enable companies to offer small satellite launch and sub-orbital spaceflight from UK spaceports. The Space Agency has considered 26 separate proposals for grant funding, that remain confidential, and will make further announcements about this in the coming months.
However, the UK Space Agency is not considering bids to become the UK’s national spaceport. Any site can still develop their plans for a UK spaceport entirely independent of government funds, and all sites will need to apply for a government licence to operate.
