Mr. Soames: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if she will list the British companies being assisted by her
Department who have won contracts in Iraq. [216104]
Ms Hewitt: My Department has provided information and assistance to a number of British companies who have won contracts in Iraq.
However, British companies are not required to report details to the Government of contracts they have won or work they are doing in
Iraq. Nor is there a central organisation that collects and publishes such information. There is therefore no definitive list of
such firms.

Mr. Soames: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if she will make a statement on the objectives of British
commercial policy in Iraq. [213528]
Ms Hewitt: The Government want to see a vibrant private sector in Iraq that will create jobs and economic growth for the Iraqi
people in the future. We also want to see UK companies play a substantial role in the reconstruction of Iraq's essential
infrastructure. It is essential that the right skills and resources are utilised in the reconstruction process. The UK private
sector has many of these.

Ms Hewitt: [holding answer 13 January 2005]: British companies are not obliged to give details of contracts won and there is
no central organisation that publishes such information. We estimate that, to date, British companies are involved in contracts for
reconstruction and other work in Iraq to the value of around US$2.6 billion. British companies are active in the power, water,
banking, ports, construction, telecoms, security, legal services and consultancy sectors.

Joan Ruddock: To ask the Minister for Women, what support the Government is giving to the Iraqi Women's Higher Council. [182674]
Ms Hewitt: The Iraqi Women's Higher Council (IWHC) was the first of a number of women's organisations to evolve over the last year.
Following a scoping study of the needs of new, emerging women's NGOs in Iraq, commissioned by DfID earlier this year, the UK is now
supporting the development of a diverse NGO sector. We believe this will provide a strong and sustainable base for ensuring women's
voices are heard, and women play a full part in the future of their nation. Currently we are helping to increase women's
organisations' influence in national policy and the political process through both the Civil Society Support Fund and the Political
Participation Fund.
