Genealogical research in Northern Ireland requires searching in a more diverse range of sources, both public and private, than is the case in the rest of the United Kingdom. The starting point is substantially different owing to the almost total absence of 19th-century census returns and of an official set of pre-1858 wills. These are available in England and Wales and in Scotland and have been the subject of extensive digitisation projects. Only the civil registration records for Scotland have been computerised, but the digitisation of those for England and Wales is now under way. Indexes of civil registration records on births, deaths and marriages in Northern Ireland have already been computerised and are available for use by members of the public in the General Register Office (GRO) Belfast. The GRO (Belfast) is also taking forward plans to digitise all civil registration records and to widen public access to them. This will bring Northern Ireland into line with the rest of the United Kingdom. The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) has completed two significant digitisation projects of interest to genealogists. It is currently engaged in two further projects with plans to develop other digitised sources. Some of the primary sources that have already been digitised will act as substitutes for the destroyed census returns, thereby improving access to genealogical records in Northern Ireland. At the same time, PRONI has been engaged in a project to put its extensive and detailed descriptive catalogues online. This will open up a vast resource to genealogists, who, for the first time, will be able to undertake comprehensive searches using personal names in the same way as genealogists can do at present in England and Wales and in Scotland.

TRACES is operating effectively with regard to notifying member states of trade activity, providing certification for trade where health certification is required and allowing traders to apply electronically for the documentation that must physically accompany consignments being traded. The Commission's expectations for the system are much farther reaching than this and TRACES is continually being developed and enhanced. We expect this to be the case for some time. Extracting reliable statistics from TRACES remains problematic and especially so for cattle exports. However, two fairly recent developments should improve the situation in the future. First, TRACES now distinguishes between breeding cattle and production cattle. This was not possible with the previous versions of the system. Secondly, the Commission has this year delivered an enhancement to TRACES called the Data Warehouse. This allows us to extract more detailed trade activity data from TRACES. The system of codes for recording the import of wild birds is now fully operational. The information provided in the Written Answer on 7 November 2005 highlighted there were discrepancies between the TRACES and CITES data and that officials were investigating the discrepancies. A ministerial colleague in the other place is writing to the Member in that place who asked the original Question, to provide him with recently published data on the bird trade. A copy of the letter will be placed in the Library of the other place. The recently published European Food Safety Authority report has the most reliable figures for 2005: 521,906 captive birds were imported to the EU, of which 61,450 were to the UK. The EFSA report does not have figures for 2004, but CITES figures are available and indicate that around 695,000 birds were imported into all member states with 18,897 birds imported into the UK.

Mr. Willetts: To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many national insurance numbers there were on (a) the Departmental Central Index and (b) NIRS1/NIRS2, in each year since 1992. [152436] Mr. Rooker: The figures are set out in the tables. The difference between the number of records held on DCI and NIRS1/NIRS2 is because: DCI holds records for 12.5 million children [Child Reference Numbers]. Such records are notified to NIRS2 only as and when the children approach age 16. DCI holds NINOs allocated to customers who are over Retirement Pension age. These records are not notified to NIRS2 as there is no contribution liability. The DCI Data Cleansing work is incorporated within the current core business. This includes such activities as data cleansing, data maintenance and the removal of duplicate and surplus NINOs. The rise in number of NINOs reflects the fact that while additions are made each year for children who reach 16 and others who apply for a NINO. Records need to be retained in the event of a surviving spouse making a claim on their partner's contribution.
