The UK condemns the continued repression of Christians and other religious minorities in Iran. At the 55th Human Rights Council, we issued a statement highlighting the discrimination faced by Christians on a daily basis, whether in accessing education, jobs, or places of worship. The UK assesses that Iran has directly supported Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. Specifically, Iran has provided intelligence to enable Houthi targeting of vessels. Furthermore, Iran has supplied the Houthis with missiles and UAVs used to attack international shipping. Iran should cease such support and use its influence to restrain its proxies to prevent further escalations.

The UK continues to seek the de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East. We are employing the full range of our diplomatic and security efforts, working with allies and international partners to counter groups seeking to undermine the region's peace, stability and prosperity.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has recently made an assessment that enough uranium has been enriched in Iran to produce three atomic warheads. If that is true, what is the Government’s consideration regarding snapping back sanctions on Iran?

The Foreign Secretary sent a clear message during his meeting with his Iranian counterpart on 17 January. The Foreign Secretary made clear that Iran must use its influence with the Houthis to prevent further strikes, and that Iran must cease its support to the Houthi's illegal and unacceptable attacks. We will continue to work with international partners to deter Iran's destabilising activity, including by holding Iran to account in multilateral fora and through sanctions; addressing Iranian weapons proliferation; and maintaining our permanent defence presence in the region.

We welcome the release of Niloufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi on bail, however it remains within Iran's power to commute their sentences. This case demonstrates the brutal reality of life in Iran for journalists. As a Media Freedom Coalition member, we continue to promote press freedom as a key pillar of human rights infrastructure, and call for the immediate release of all arbitrarily detained journalists.

In response to Iran's non-compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA), the UK maintained sanctions on individuals and entities involved in Iran's nuclear programme, as well as trade restrictions including an arms embargo, that were due to lift in October 2023 under the JCPoA's terms. We are prepared to use all diplomatic options to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, including triggering the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 'snapback' mechanism, if necessary.

The Foreign Secretary has made it clear to his Iranian counterpart that Iran must stop using regional instability as cover to act recklessly. He and Lord Ahmad have also underlined to Pakistan’s Foreign Minister the importance of avoiding further escalation. We welcome Iran and Pakistan’s subsequent commitment to dialogue in a joint statement released on 22 January, confirming that ambassadors will return to post, and we continue to monitor the situation.

What recent discussions he has had with his international counterparts on the state of relations between Iran and Pakistan.

As the Minister said, diplomatic efforts have eased tensions following the exchange of missiles earlier this month. However, the Minister will be aware that, over the weekend, Iranian gunmen murdered nine Pakistanis in the Iranian city of Saravan. The fact that both countries have launched air strikes against each other indicates how fragile the situation is in the middle east, and how interconnected acts of war and violence are across the whole region. How will the British Government ensure that their own actions do not escalate tensions?

In 2022 and 2023 the Royal Navy interdicted Iranian missiles and components which were being smuggled from Iran to the Houthis in violation of UN Security Council Resolutions. These weapons were similar to the weapons the Houthis have recently used to disrupt shipping in the Red Sea. Iran has been supplying the Houthis with intelligence and continues to supply them with weapons; on 17 January the Foreign Secretary made clear to the Iranian Foreign Minister that this must stop. A new Iran sanctions regime was launched in December which includes trade restrictions on UAVs and components.
