We maintain statistics of the total numbers of British nationals detained overseas but, apart from those detained for drugs-related offences and child-sex-related offences, we do not maintain records of the offences for which they were convicted. Obtaining this information for France, Italy and Spain over the past five years could be done only at disproportionate cost.

We continue to press for the return of the Royal Navy boats and equipment seized by Iranian forces in June 2004. Their return is the subject of ongoing discussions between the Government and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

My Lords, the United Nations Security Council has spoken for the whole international community in condemning the remarks about Israel made by President Ahmadinejad. We summoned the Iranian chargé d’affaires on 27 October to protest. On the same day, we issued a statement on behalf of the European Union heads of government which condemned the comments in the strongest terms. The statement emphasised that calls for violence and for the destruction of any state are manifestly inconsistent with any claim to be a mature and responsible member of the international community.

My Lords, representatives of the Government of Iran have made a number of statements indicating a wish to resume the conversion of uranium at its facility at Esfahan. We have made it clear to Iran that such action would breach the November 2004 Paris agreement. In this case, the United Kingdom, along with France and Germany, shall have no choice but to support referring Iran's nuclear programme to the UN Security Council. We remain committed to seeking mutually acceptable long-term arrangements with Iran, but that must be within the context of the Paris agreement.
