I have committed to keep the House informed regarding Ajax programme, most recently through my Written Ministerial Statement of 19 May 2022 (HCWS42).
The Safety Panel that approved the user validation trials on 12 May at Bovington put in place, appropriately, a very cautious safety protocol, including pre and post-trial checks on the hearing of Service personnel, a level of monitoring more rigorous than that used for the trials of any other armoured vehicle. These checks included all individuals exposed to Ajax, and, alongside them, some who were not. We detected as a result of these protocols transient subtle anomalies in some individuals in both the exposed and non-exposed groups. I can confirm the hearing of all individuals concerned has returned to their pre-existing recorded levels, however I am withholding more detail to protect the medical confidence of the small number of personnel involved. The trials were paused on 13 May.
The occurrence of the transient anomalies detected is being followed up by the Army, supported by the Surgeon General, working with external experts to understand their significance.
14 Service personnel were recorded as crew for the independent Ajax trials conducted in June 2021 by Millbrook. Between July 2021 and 12 May 2022, a Safety Notice meant that Service personnel were not used as crew for any trials, including those conducted by Millbrook.
The trials conducted on 12 May 2022 were conducted at the Armoured Trials and Development Unit Bovington by Service personnel with active support and involvement by Millbrook.

We do not plan to publish the report once trials have completed. The analysis of the report, which includes detailed information about the performance of military equipment could be potentially operationally sensitive However it will help inform the way ahead on Ajax and I will continue to keep the House updated on the outcome of our analysis and the implications of the programme.

The embarked CROWSNEST fitted aircraft on the Carrier Strike Group 2021 deployment were not part of the trials programme.
Feedback from the frontline operators, which further developed tactics, techniques and procedures, was passed successfully back to industry to inform system development.

The UK Mechanised Infantry Programme will conduct confirmatory reliability tests, however there are currently no plans to conduct reliability growth trials for BOXER as the base Off the Shelf vehicle is already a qualified design and the project is drawing from existing reliability data. This will be kept under review.

No medical personnel have participated directly in the trials, but they have supported the subsequent assessment and treatment of personnel who have operated Ajax vehicles.

The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) is a no-fault scheme which provides benefit for injury, illness or death caused wholly or predominantly by service on or after 6 April 2005. Personnel who have sustained injuries or illness whilst participating in the Armed Forces activities can make a claim under the scheme. Any award made is then offset by any successful common law damages settlement or vice versa to ensure there is no double recovery of compensation.

Depending on the circumstances of each claim, Army personnel might wish to make a claim under the Armed Forces compensation scheme or against the MOD. Depending on those circumstances, the MOD might seek to involve its contractor, General Dynamics UK.

A total of 6,177 rounds have been fired to September 2021, which includes 563 Armour Piercing Fin Stabilised Discarding Sabot-Tracer rounds and 5,614 Target Practice-Tracer rounds.
