The UK Government has long condemned Iran's destabilising activity throughout the Middle East, including its military, financial, and political support to several militant and proscribed groups. These groups represent a danger to global security such as through attacks on international shipping. The UK works closely with several nations in the Middle East, including Israel, to defend our strategic interests in the region from these malign actors. We have also deployed additional military assets to the Eastern Mediterranean and East of Suez to deter attacks on international shipping, reinforce regional stability and prevent escalation.

The UK has long made clear our apprehension towards Iran's reckless and destabilising activity in Syria. Iran's support to militant and proscribed groups, including potentially more permanent Iranian military bases, directly counters UK interests. The Ministry of Defence continues to maintain thorough assessments of the threats to stability and security across the Middle East region including Syria. The Government is also committed to working with the international community to ensure Iran and the regime are held to account for their destabilising activity in Syria.

The UK will not tolerate Iranian threats against the lives of individuals in the UK. His Majesty's Government has identified at least 15 such threats since January 2022, including against Iran International employees based in London, and is working to tackle this domestic threat. Iran has established a pattern of this type of behaviour which is deplorable, yet sadly typical of the regime and its lack of respect for basic rights.
On 20 February, the Security Minister gave a statement in the House of Commons on steps being taken to address the activities of the Iranian regime and its operatives in the UK. The Foreign Secretary also summoned Iran's most senior diplomat in the UK on 20 Feb to formally protest against the threats posed by the Iranian regime to the lives of UK-based Iran International employees.
The UK Government, law enforcement and our international partners continue to work together to respond to ensure Iran International's UK operations will resume. Targeting of UK-based journalists is an attack on freedom of speech. Media freedom is a vital part of our society and journalists must be able to investigate and report independently without fear. The UK stands in solidarity with those people under threat from Iran, both at home and around the world.

The Government takes the deepening alliance between Russia and Iran as a serious threat. Russia is making increasingly desperate choices to continue its unprovoked war against Ukraine, particularly in the face of our unprecedented sanctions and export controls. Iranian-inspired militia activity in Iraq poses an ongoing threat to Coalition forces. We have been clear that these attacks, and the threat of the attacks, harm Iraq's peace, stability and prosperity. We continue to work with the Government of Iraq to promote stability and reduce the threat of further attacks by these groups.

The Government has long held concerns over both Iran's destabilising activity and its continued and systematic non-compliance with its nuclear commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action(JCPOA). We regularly discuss how best to address Iranian destabilising activities across government, as well as with our partners in the Gulf, Europe, and the United States (US). Our top priority remains to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability; the Government remains firmly committed to the JCPOA and continues to support negotiations with all parties and the new US administration. We have made clear that we favour a diplomatic solution where the door is kept open for renewed talks between Iran, the US and regional partners. A sustainable solution should not only address Iran's nuclear non-compliance but also its ballistic missile program and its destabilising activity across the region.
