That this House congratulates Professor Sir Harold Kroto of the University of Sussex on the award of the 1996 Nobel Prize for Chemistry; notes that he receives this Nobel Prize together with two other colleagues for his pioneering work in the discovery of Buckminster-fullerenes, carbon atoms bound together in the form of a ball; notes his long and distinguished scientific career in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States of America, including his Fellowship of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and his award from the Society of the Tilden Lectureship in 1981-82 and the Royal Society of Chemistry's Longstaff Medal in 1993; notes his association with the University of Sussex where he holds his present post as Royal Society Research Professor; and notes the crucial importance to the United Kingdom of retaining the strongest and best resourced science base possible to enable British science to remain world class and to provide more Nobel laureates in the future.
