Mr. Campbell-Savours: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if the return of railway lines
imported from Italy in 2000 was related to the need to maintain safety standards on the national rail network. [143563]
Mr. Hill: No rail has been returned to Italy. Railtrack have simply put an embargo on importing any more until such time as they are
satisfied that the Italian company's quality control can reliably meet specification.

Mr. Hoon: The UK does not comment on the spending plans of other nations. We do, however, seek to encourage nations to spend their
defence budgets as effectively and efficiently as possible and to target spending on improving military capabilities.

Mr. Casale: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assessment he has made of the state of relations
between Her Majesty's Government and the Government of Italy. [135850]
Mr. Vaz: Our bilateral relations with Italy are excellent, and continue to flourish. The closeness of the relationship was further
demonstrated by the very successful state visit to Italy last month, when the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh enjoyed the
exceptionally warm welcome and hospitality of the Italian people. The Queen and the Duke were accompanied on the visit by the
Foreign Secretary , and the Minister for Europe. Both Ministers met leading figures from Italian politics.

Mr. Vaz: The state visit to Italy has served to convey the strongest possible reaffirmation of the high regard that our countries
have for one another; as friends, allies and economic partners. The Queen's meetings with leading figures from the political and
business fields, as well as those of the Foreign Secretary and the Minister for Europe, demonstrated the keenness that our countries
have to work closely together, for the mutual benefit of both countries, and for the EU as a whole.

Mr. Casale: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement about recent progress in
strengthening British- Italian bilateral relations. [R] [129559]
Mr. Vaz: British-Italian relations are strong both in bilateral and the EU and NATO contexts. President Ciampi visited Britain for a
brief visit on 1 June when he attended a lunch hosted by HM the Queen and Prince Philip. During the visit my right hon. Friend the
Foreign Secretary held bilateral meetings with Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini.
Her Majesty the Queen will make a State Visit to Italy 16-19 October visiting Rome and Milan.
