Dr. Cable: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how much financial assistance has been given in each of the last five years to (a) the British Printing Industries Federation, (b) the Booksellers Association, (c) London Fashion Week, (d) the Designer Fact File and (e) the Education Pack for Schools in the Clothing and Textile industries; what assistance is planned for the next three years; and if she will make a statement. [78261] Mr. Timms: DTI does not provide direct financial assistance to the British Printing Industries Federation or the Booksellers Association but has worked with these organisations in partnership with other industry members to support initiatives aimed at raising their sectors' competitiveness and productivity. My Department has contributed support towards the above initiatives as follows: London Fashion Week: 1997-2000--£120,000 per annum 2001--£170,000 2002--£214,000 Designer Fact File: 1997--£22,000 Education Packs for Clothing and Textiles: April 2001 to April 2003--£161,500 This support relates to specific industry-led initiatives aiming at supporting the UK textiles and clothing sector. The focus for this assistance is the priorities identified by the industry itself, contained in the Textiles and Clothing Strategy Group's report: 'A National Strategy for the UK Textiles and Clothing Industry', published in June 2000. DTI will continue to work with the TCSG to support this industry but the level of future support depends on it coming forward with appropriate initiatives to help raise its competitiveness and viability.

Jeremy Corbyn: To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what her latest estimate is of recycling rates of waste (a) paper, (b) glass, (c) metal, (d) wood and (e) cloth for each London borough; what the Government targets are in each case; and if she will make a statement. [71108] Mr. Meacher: [holding answer 19 July 2002]: Recycling data are collected in the Department's annual Municipal Waste Management Survey 2000-01. The total tonnages collected for recycling for different materials are listed below for all London boroughs and the four London Waste Disposal Authorities. Recycling rates are not available for individual materials. Separate recycling tonnages are not available for wood. The Government's Waste Strategy 2000 established national targets of recycling or composting at least 25 per cent. of household waste by 2005, 30 per cent. by 2010 and 33 per cent. by 2015. These targets are not material specific. To underpin the national targets, we have set challenging statutory performance standards for recycling or composting household waste for each local authority in England. Authorities must, on average, double their 1998-99 recycling rate by 2003-04 and triple their 1998-99 rate by 2005-06. The Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 1997 (as amended) set annual recovery and material-specific recycling targets for certain businesses. Mr. Wray: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what assistance has been given to the textile and clothing industry since 1997; what measures are in place to help the textile and clothing industry develop faster and more environmentally-friendly techniques; and what proposals her Department has to support the exports of the textiles and clothing industry's products. [70128] Stephen Timms: The Government has provided almost £83 million of financial assistance to the UK textiles and clothing industry since May 1997, devoted to capital investment, innovation, exports, design and marketing, e-commerce, supply chain management, technical textiles and training and development. A key element of this assistance has been support for a Textiles and Clothing Industry Forum Adaptation programme, designed to improve the speed, efficiency and quality of the UK textile and clothing supply chain. The UK textiles and clothing industry has already capitalised on the DTI's BIO-WISE programme which encourages companies to exploit the environmental benefits of biotechnology and also the Envirowise programme which provides practical environmental advice to businesses, focusing on resource efficiency and clean technology measures. In collaboration with CBWT, (the Confederation of British Wool Textiles), DTI is supporting a project to predict the effect of textile chemicals on the aquatic environment aimed at reducing effluent emissions at source. Textile and clothing companies are eligible for the full range of export advice and assistance from Trade Partners UK, including assistance under the Support for Exhibitions and Seminars Abroad (SESA) scheme. This scheme helps them attend and exhibit at key overseas trade fairs and exhibitions. The value of support for clothing and textiles events under the SESA scheme in 2001-02 was £3,740,732.
