The prehistoric footprints on Formby beach provide important insights into how animals and humans were moving about in the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. We have taken the advice of specialists in this period. The human and animal footprints have been exposed in soft tidal silts through coastal erosion, and therefore cannot be preserved "in situ", since they are constantly eroded by the tide, but they can be recorded as they appear.
The Heritage Lottery Fund has earmarked funding of £1,174,000 towards proposals for a Landscape Partnership Scheme on the Sefton coast, which covers the area with the footprints. The earmarked funding includes funding of £57,200 to further develop the bid. Landscape Partnerships is an HLF grant programme to support schemes of between £250,000 and £2 million led by partnerships of local, regional and national interests, which aim to conserve areas of distinctive landscape character throughout the United Kingdom. This scheme includes a project which involves training volunteers to record the footprints, and helping to make information available to the public about them.

Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council is the authority responsible for coastal erosion matters at Formby. In partnership with other relevant organisations, it has developed a shoreline management plan for this stretch of coastline.
The shoreline management plan determines the long-term policy for each stretch of coast, taking into account the natural processes and climate change, including sea level rise.
The first generation shoreline management plan was completed in 1998. Since then, the coast has been carefully monitored to assess the amount of change taking place and any changes in the risk of coastal flooding. The policies for this stretch of coastline are currently under review in light of the latest climate change information, as part of the second generation of shoreline management plan development. This will help determine the longer term options for the coast in that location covering the next 100 years. The second generation plan is due to go out to consultation in the autumn this year.
This part of the coast is designated as a site of special scientific interest. The current shoreline management plan review is therefore carefully considering the environmental value of the dune system, as part of the longer term options.

Natural England is a member of the Sefton Coast Partnership which has recently approved the Sefton Coast Nature Conservation Strategy.
The strategy has a set of principles which will inform future management of the coast. There is specific mention of fragmentation as an issue for the Sefton coast and the remedy for this will include some tree removal.
Early in 2008, Natural England released a statement of how it will proceed with future management of tree cover, though no current plans exist for this work. When Natural England begins to develop ideas for the future management, it will consult the public and other stakeholders and ensure its plans conform with the above strategy, as well as to the Sefton Coast Woodlands Forest Plan; a 20-year plan to diversify the habitat within the area.

The Forestry Commission and Natural England are partners in the ““Save our Squirrels”” project that is working with local people and organisations in the Formby Red Squirrel Reserve and surrounding buffer zone to control grey squirrels, believed to be the source of the squirrelpox virus, and to remove diseased red squirrels in the hope of reducing the spread of the disease. The Forestry Commission has also entered into a Red Squirrel Woodland Improvement Grant agreement with woodland owners close to Formby to support the control of grey squirrels. Previous outbreaks in the squirrel reserve have not been sustained, but red squirrel populations have been impacted.
Squirrelpox cannot be eradicated without first understanding how the disease is transmitted within and between grey and red squirrel populations. We will then be better informed about how to minimise risk of transmission and how vaccine might be targeted. The Scottish Government are funding a three year PhD study into how the squirrelpox virus is transmitted from greys to reds and investigating the possibilities of a vaccine. This study, which began in June 2007, is being undertaken at the Moredun Institute and is costing around £100,000 per annum for three years. Furthermore, the Wildlife Ark Trust has raised £250,000 of funding for the first stage of a programme which will last two years, to develop a squirrelpox vaccine for the red squirrel.
