Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream infections and C. difficile infections are at their lowest levels since mandatory surveillance began. Compared to the 12 months to May 2010, the latest annual data show that MRSA bloodstream infections have fallen by 48% and C. difficile infections by 38%.
Data on health care associated infections in Wales are collated and published by the Welsh Healthcare Associated Infection Programme. Information on all health care associated infections covering England is not collected routinely by the Health Protection Agency. However, the agency does collect data on specific health care associated infections in England, such as MRSA bacteraemia, Clostridium difficile infection, and Methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia, that are detected and reported by an acute NHS Trust laboratory.

The Department's National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is jointly funding the UKCRC (UK Clinical Research Collaboration) Translational Infection Research Initiative with other UKCRC partners. Under this initiative, two consortia are studying the use of genome sequencing in infection control.
The Modernising Medical Microbiology Consortium aims to exploit recent advances in sequencing the genomes of bacterial and viral pathogens of public health concern, to improve and speed up their classification and identification. The NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre is a partner in the consortium. The work of the consortium includes a study, hosted by the NIHR Clinical Research Network, establishing how new strain typing and database technologies can be optimally integrated into microbiology service and research—to track and identify outbreaks in Staphylococcus aureus and other pathogens.
The Cambridge Translational Microbiology Consortium aims to bring rapid microbial genome sequencing into the heart of the diagnostic microbiology laboratory, and has an initial focus on Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
In addition, the NIHR Centre for Health Protection Research has a current project on development of a whole genome sequence-based tool to track MRSA transmission in the United Kingdom.

Staphylococcus aureus recovered from poultry during laboratory examinations of clinical material at AHVLA Regional Laboratories and subjected to susceptibility testing are examined to determine whether or not they are MRSA. No MRSA have been detected in poultry, although the numbers of isolates examined each year is relatively low.
The Food Standards Agency conducted a UK-wide survey between May 2007 and September 2008 to determine Campylobacter and Salmonella prevalence on fresh chicken at retail. This survey did not include any testing of levels of MRSA in the chicken samples collected. The Food Standards Agency has not conducted any other testing of MRSA in chicken and turkey products on sale to the public.
