For the period 6 to 9 November the Department has incurred costs of £115,200 for the survey of woodland. This comprises actual costs and reasonable estimates where actual costs are not currently available, including the estimated cost of staff being diverted from other activities to undertake survey work.
We have not made any estimates of the cost of the ongoing weekly and monthly tree surveys. Future surveillance work will be determined by the control plan for delivering our objectives for tackling Chalara fraxinea. Until this is in place, we will not be in a position to estimate the cost of any ongoing tree surveys.

No estimate has been made by constituency area or by national park. However, the 45 County Reports for England from the Forestry Commission's National Inventory of Woodland and Trees published in 2001 give information on the area of woodland where ash is the principal species and an estimate of the number of ash trees outside woodland. These reports are available on the Forestry Commission's website.

The replies to the consultation have been valuable in developing a control plan, which is due for completion and publication in December. The results of the consultation will be published at the same time.

The first finding of ash dieback in the UK was reported to the European Commission in March 2012 and updates given to the June, September, October and November meetings of the Commission's Standing Committee on plant health. We will continue to report significant developments to the Standing Committee at its monthly meetings.

We have not made any estimates of these costs. We are currently developing a control plan for delivering our objectives for tackling “Chalara fraxinea”. Until this is in place we will not be in a position to consider the cost of managing the outbreak.

The Plant Health (Forestry) (Amendment) Order 2012 prohibits all movements of ash plants, trees and seeds into and within Great Britain unless the material originates from a pest free area. Equivalent legislation exists in Northern Ireland. As yet no pest free areas have been recognised and there are no nurseries authorised to issue plant passports for the movement of ash plants, trees or seeds in the UK.
