To ask Her Majesty’s Government what assessment they have made of the economic benefits to Israel of operation Protective Edge; and to what extent the United Kingdom has benefited from the testing of weapons during that action.
The British Government has not made any assessment of the impact on the Israeli economy, beneficial or not, of Operation Protective Edge. The UK has not benefitted in any way from the ‘testing’ of weapons.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what checks are in place to ensure that MOTs are conducted properly; and what action is taken if they are not.
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) conduct a number of different activities to monitor the quality of testing at MOT Garages. These range from re-inspecting vehicles that have just been tested through to conducting mystery shopper type activities.
DVSA use a mechanism to target its resource to those MOT Garages that present the greatest risk profile. The type of activity conducted is based on that which is best suited for the identified risk. These activities can range from an educative type support to a more stringent enforcement approach.
Where poor quality testing has been identified an assessment is carried out and, again, the approach is designed to be proportionate to the need - focused on best ensuring test quality. This could include on-site support or redirected additional training. More serious cases can result in the authorisation of either the Tester or the Authorised Examiner being removed from the scheme.
The new DVLA contract with Specsavers for drivers’ eye tests has meant that constituents in Campbeltown or Islay have to travel 90 miles by road or take a four-hour ferry journey to get their eye tests, which is completely unacceptable. May we have an urgent statement from the Department for...

I am advised that Specsavers is currently negotiating contracts with a number of independent opticians to ensure that there is appropriate coverage. I am advised, too, that where it is unable to negotiate a contract locally, the DVLA does not expect individuals to travel excessive distances. Where it is satisfied...

None. Under the 1958 Mutual Defence Agreement, joint UK/US experiments have been carried out using facilities at the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston to ensure the continued safety, security, and performance of UK and US nuclear warhead stockpiles; these experiments would not have been prohibited in the US.

My hon. Friend is making an important case, and one that I am sure Formulated Polymer Products in Ramsbottom, which makes such chemicals, would support. Does he agree that what we need is better and more rigorous enforcement of the existing regulations by trading standards?

I thank my hon. Friend for making that important point. The existing regulations are incredibly effective and have saved many lives; they could save more lives if they were enforced effectively. We should be enforcing the regulations, rather than playing about with them and trying to come up with a...
