The Secretary of State recently the Chairman and the CEO of The Heritage Alliance to discuss matters including the future of the rural landscape once we leave the European Union.
This is part of our ongoing commitment to making sure that the views of all interested groups are considered in the development of our new agricultural policy, which will make sure that public money is spent on public goods, supporting our rural areas and the environment.

Government remains committed to considering the results of the 2014 Impact Review on the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage, in order to assess whether the UK should pursue ratification. A decision on timescales for reviewing the Convention will be made in late Spring 2017. Government has already adopted the Rules for activities directed at underwater cultural heritage, found in the annex of the Convention, as best practice.

Officials at the Department held a range of discussions with the A level exam boards on this issue as soon as AQA made clear that it did not intend to continue developing a new A level in archaeology. However, it is for individual examination boards to decide which qualifications to offer and we regret that no board has come forward that is willing to develop a new A level in archaeology for teaching from 2017.
However, the option for an exam board to develop qualifications in this subject in future will remain open.
