To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what assessment he has made of the contribution to growth and employment in the STEM sector made by the general aviation sector in the UK.
In March 2015 the Government published research that the Department for Transport commissioned from York Aviation entitled “The Economic Value of General Aviation in the UK”. That research contained an estimate of the jobs linked to the general aviation sector in the UK being 38,000. York Aviation did not separate out the contribution from the Government’s STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics) education programmes.
We are commissioning research on what a strategic network of general aviation airfields might look like and this research may review that calculation. We expect this research to report in 2018.
As my right hon. Friend will be aware, 2018 is the year of the engineer, with one of the aims being to change the perception of engineering, particularly among young women. Will she meet me, in my role as the Government’s envoy for this campaign, to discuss how her Department can work with the Department for Transport to further these aims?

The Ministry of Defence is a member of the Nuclear Skills Strategy Group (NSSG) which brings together partners from both the defence and civil nuclear sectors. As per the December 2016 NSSG Strategic Plan, provision of suitably qualified and experienced nuclear propulsion personnel is a key consideration of the NSSG. As part of the UK Industrial Strategy, one of the main proposals of the Nuclear Sector Deal is around skills and training.

The Institute for Apprenticeships is independent of the department and determines its own processes. The Institute wrote to the hon. Member for Liverpool Riverside directly on 28 November responding to the question regarding the commencement of the Building Services Engineering Technician. A copy of that response has been placed in the Libraries of both Houses.

To ask Her Majesty's Government what is the average cost of delivering a manufacturing and engineering apprenticeship for each level.
The cost of individual apprenticeships will depend on the price agreed by employers and apprenticeship providers.
Details of funding bands for apprenticeship standards and frameworks, approved for delivery for starts from May 2017 (attached) can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/apprenticeship-funding-bands.
The funding bands limit the amount that the government will contribute towards the costs of training and assessment.

The Institute for Apprenticeships is an independent body with responsibility for the development and approval of apprenticeship standards. I have asked the Institute to write to The hon. Member for Liverpool Riverside directly responding to this question regarding the Building Services Engineering Technician apprenticeships scheme.

To ask the Minister for Women and Equalities, what steps the Government is taking to increase the number of women taking up careers in science and engineering.
Girls are just as likely to do well in science, technology, enginerring and mathematics (STEM) GCSEs as boys and the number of girls taking STEM A Levels since 2010 has increased by 20%, but there’s more to do.
STEM careers have a 19% pay premium and we are spending over £12m per year on programmes to increase take up of physics, computing and maths A Levels; for example, the Stimulating Physics Network which provides specific support to address the low uptake of physics.
Apprenticeships are also a crucial route into engineering and that’s why the National College for High Speed Rail will be delivering apprenticeships in the industry and focusing on getting more young women to apply.
I congratulate my hon. Friend on her initiative. She raises a very important point: I think it is important that we see more young people moving into engineering and pursuing careers in engineering and science more generally. The steps she is taking with our hon. Friend the Member for South West Wiltshire (Dr Murrison) are an important part of that. We do need to address those stereotypes. I am particularly keen to address the stereotype about women in engineering, because we should see more women going into engineering. If my diary allows, I would be very happy to attend her festival.

The Institute for Apprenticeships is an independent body with responsibility for the development and approval of apprenticeship standards. I have therefore asked the Institute to write to the hon. Member directly, responding to your question about the publication of apprenticeship standards in consultancy in level 6 building services design engineering, level 6 civil engineering design engineering and construction at levels 4 and 6.
