To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what assessment he has made of the cost implications to the NHS of any withdrawal of NHS homeopathic services and medicines.
As he knows, NHS England is consulting on draft guidance for commissioners on low value prescription items which includes homeopathic services and medicines. The Government will always support the provision of safe, clinically-effective services for patients, in accordance with NICE recommendations.

NHS England and NHS Clinical Commissioners are currently working on commissioning guidance including for medicines where there is a lack of robust evidence of clinical effectiveness. This will include guidance on homeopathy and it is due out for consultation shortly.

NHS England is leading a review of low value prescription items which are clinically ineffective, unnecessary, unsafe or inappropriate for prescription on the National Health Service, for example, because they can be purchased relatively inexpensively over the counter, often at a lower price than they cost the NHS.
Initially this work will focus on the top 10 areas of low clinical value as identified by NHS Clinical Commissioners through a survey of their member. Areas it will consider will be determined according to where there is evidence of low clinical value and/or where there is significant NHS expenditure.
Although complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) are still available for individual practitioners to prescribe, many clinical commissioning groups have already issued guidance relating to their availability on the NHS. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence provides guidance to the NHS on effective treatments that are value for money, and has recommended the use of CAMs in only a limited number of circumstances.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to the Answer of 22 February 2017 to Question 64041, if he will make it his Department's policy that traditional herbal registration will only be issued to products which exclude all medical use.
Question 64041 refers to homeopathy and this is not relevant in the context of products registered under the traditional herbal registration.
Products registered in the United Kingdom under the traditional herbal registration scheme are required to fulfil the requirements of the Directive on Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products.
Article 16 a 1 (a) of Directive 2004/24 requires that Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products ‘have indications exclusively appropriate to traditional herbal medicinal products which, by virtue of their composition and purpose, are intended and designed for use without the supervision of a medical practitioner for diagnostic purposes or for prescription or monitoring of treatment’.
It is therefore a requirement for products registered under the traditional herbal registration scheme to have indications to ensure they are used safely for the correct purpose.
