As the Prime Minister will be aware, dairy is very important for growing children and as part of a healthy diet. The sector is integral to Great British food and
drink. As the chairman of the dairy all-party parliamentary group, may I ask whether she will support our campaign next year to rebrand milk, to ask supermarkets to include it as part of their meal deal selections and as part of a healthy diet to promote drinking milk in schools? Will she join me this Christmas in raising a glass to our fabulous dairy farmers?

I am very happy to join my hon. Friend in commending the work of our dairy farmers. He talks about the importance of dairy. He is, rightly, a great advocate for rural issues. It is one of the most efficient, innovative and high-quality dairy industries in the EU. I am sure my right hon. Friend the Environment Secretary will be very happy to discuss the particular points he raises, but I join him in recognising the importance of our dairy industry.

The UK Government is committed to seeking continuity in its current trade and investment relationships. Initial discussions between Defra officials and their US counterparts have made it clear that enabling trade in organic products between the UK and the US to continue is in the interest of both parties.

The government has committed to review the exemption for milk-based products in 2020 based on evidence from Public Health England on the progress the industry has made on reformulating their products.

This government wants pupils to be healthy. It promotes the consumption of dairy products as part of a balanced diet through guidance, funding and legislation.
The School Food Standards (where they apply) provide the legislative framework to ensure schools provide children with healthy food and drink options. This includes a requirement to make milk available at least once during the school day. The majority of schools are subject to the School Food Standards. However, some academies and free schools are not. As part of our work on the childhood obesity plan, we will be encouraging all schools to commit to the standards.
The Department does not hold information on how many schools in Garston and Halewood constituency comply with the milk requirements of the School Food Standards.
As indicated in ‘Childhood Obesity: a plan for action’, we will update the School Food Standards in light of refreshed government dietary recommendations. We plan to make further information on this work available later in the year. As stated in my answer to parliamentary question 64266, the revised Eatwell guide is distributed to schools to use alongside the school food standards and continues to define the government’s recommendations on a healthy balanced diet.

There are no plans to specifically assess the effect of the Eatwell Guide on children’s milk consumption or changes in the levels of childhood obesity.
It is not possible to determine whether individual food and drink consumption patterns are directly influenced by national initiatives such as the Eatwell Guide, due to the range of factors that affect the diet.

Work is ongoing to understand the implications for the UK of leaving the EU under a range of scenarios. We are determined to get the best possible deal for the UK in our negotiations to leave the EU, which allows frictionless trade in goods and services and the opportunity to reach new agreements with countries around the world.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what assessment he has made of the potential merits of limiting the sugar content of milk-based drinks.
Any soft drinks that ultimately remain out of scope of the Government’s Soft Drinks Industry Levy (SDIL) will be included in Public Health England’s sugar reduction and wider reformulation programme, which aims to see voluntary reductions in sugar content of 20% by 2020 across a number of food and drinks categories.
The SDIL will be applied to producers and importers of packaged added sugar drinks to encourage product reformulation, but will not apply to fruit juices, smoothies and packaged drinks containing more than 75% milk content.
