I thank the Leader of the House for the future business. I am also pleased about Birmingham getting the Commonwealth games—I have my running shoes on already.
I note that there was no date for the restoration and renewal debate. I know that the Leader of the House listened to the...

I am sure that the hon. Lady’s joke will resound around many a Christmas table this year. May I particularly join her in sending all our sympathies to the Deputy Speaker and his family? What a terrible tragedy! We are all so sorry. I also want to echo her remarks...

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will assess the diplomatic implications of reports of anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, racist and anti-refugee hate speech during the recent march in Warsaw to mark Poland’s Independence Day.

Her Majesty's Government strongly condemns all types of hate speech and we encourage all countries to investigate and tackle any reported incidents of hate speech. The UK and Poland have worked together on combatting hate crime through a joint workshop in London in 2017 and by co-hosting an expert panel at an Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe event in September 2016. Our Embassy in Warsaw is in contact with local NGOs who monitor incidents of hate crime.
I am sure that my right hon. Friend will join me in paying tribute to the 150 British troops sent to north-east Poland, to the Suwalki Gap,
on rotational deployment. What steps will he take to ensure that we increase those numbers and continue to support our Polish allies in a post-Brexit world through our NATO alliance?

I have already had a great opportunity to meet my Polish opposite number, who is incredibly grateful for our commitment to the defence of Poland. We constantly review troop numbers and are committed to the current rotation, but we are always open to the idea of committing more. We must not underestimate the threat that Russia continues to pose and must be ready to step up to such a threat. Although we are leaving the EU, our commitment to the collective defence of Europe is not diminished.

Her Majesty's Government has had no direct dialogue with the European Commission on this issue. But when it has been discussed in the General Affairs Council, we have called for Poland and the Commission to engage in substantive, sustained and constructive dialogue in order to reach a mutually agreeable solution.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what representations he has made to the Polish Government on logging in the Bialowieza forest.

The UK has been a long-standing advocate of environmental protection. This case is in the hands of the EU Court of Justice, whose meeting is awaited. As such, we have made no formal bilateral representation to the Polish Government or European Commission. Our Embassy in Warsaw are monitoring developments and have been in touch with the Environment Ministry at a working level.
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, when the Government plans to sign the defence co-operation treaty with Poland announced in the joint communiqué issued in December 2016.
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, when the Government plans to sign the defence co-operation treaty with Poland announced in the joint communiqué issued in December 2016.
The plan is for the UK/Poland Bilateral Defence Cooperation Treaty to be signed by the end of this calendar year, at the next PM-led Inter-Governmental Consultations.
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what assessment his Department has made of the added value a bilateral defence co-operation treaty with Poland will bring to existing NATO guarantees between the UK and Poland.

The UK and Poland have a strong bilateral relationship; we have approximately 150 UK troops deployed to Poland on a persistent basis as part of enhanced Forward Presence. We are both important members of NATO. The UK/Poland bilateral Defence Cooperation Treaty will provide a framework for collaboration that is complementary to our work in NATO but in no way supersedes it. We have other bilateral treaties with NATO Allies, such as France, which work in a similar manner.
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what specific areas of co-operation will be covered by the UK's defence co-operation treaty with Poland announced in the joint communiqué issued in December 2016.
To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what specific areas of co-operation will be covered by the UK's defence co-operation treaty with Poland announced in the joint communiqué issued in December 2016.
The Treaty will provide a framework for defence cooperation that includes a range of areas where we may wish to work together, such as training, exercises, sharing information and defence industry.
The text for the Treaty is still under negotiation and it would therefore be inappropriate to comment in further detail.
I beg to move,
That this House has considered Anglo-Polish relations.
I am grateful to be speaking in this important debate. My family and I left Poland and came to the United Kingdom in 1978, because of communism. My parents were staunchly anti-communist and refused to live under the tyranny of communism,...

The hon. Gentleman’s points are extremely important. The contribution and enormous sacrifice made by the Polish people means that they have the support of every proud member of this nation.
The inquest on the suicide of Dagmara Przybysz opened yesterday. That bright, intelligent young woman committed suicide because she was bullied...

I am grateful to the hon. Gentleman for raising that point. My right hon. Friend the Minister drew to my attention a newspaper article about that beautiful young Polish girl, who was found hanged in school as a result of being bullied by a racist gang.

Will my hon. Friend give way?
Will my hon. Friend give way?
I am going to make some progress, but then I will give way.
The hon. Member for Ealing North (Stephen Pound) is of course correct, and that is why the Polish war memorial is important. Such visible signs of the contribution of Poles to the United Kingdom are important, because we...

Does the hon. Gentleman agree that the same defence could be made of countries such as Jordan and Turkey, which have already accepted far more refugees than they can sustainably look after? If the United Kingdom was prepared to take a decent number of refugees from Syria and Iraq, instead...

I do not really want to get into a debate about our domestic immigration policies. I am proud that the United Kingdom has provided more money than any country apart from America for refugee camps in Jordan and Lebanon, but of course we can do more.

I thank my hon. Friend for allowing me to intervene and to express my admiration for the Polish people. A huge number of Polish people have moved to my constituency and, I am sure, to many others. They work incredibly hard and are committed to their families—that is their reputation—all...
