To ask Her Majesty's Government what discussions they have had with the government of Iran about the reported arrest of over 100 Christians in Iran.
Despite constitutional recognition, the persecution of Christians has been continuous, systemic, and institutionalised. We regularly raise the treatment of Christians in Iran with the Iranian Government, and we continue to take action with the international community to press Iran to improve its poor record on all human rights issues.

The Home Office publishes data, in its quarterly Immigration Statistics release, on (a) the number of applications in the UK (table as_01_q Asylum, volume 1), and (b) the number of applications that were granted (in the same table), by nationality.

We continue to assess the impact of US sanctions as they come into force, including the impact of the various exemptions granted by the US. We expect wide-ranging impact, including on trade, infrastructure projects, payment for services and tourism. Given Iran is a major energy supplier, we can expect some countries to diversify. Her Majesty's Government is committed to maintaining the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and as part of this we continue to support legitimate trade with Iran in line with sanctions relief.

The second set of US unilateral sanctions on Iran came into full force on 5 November. We consider it is therefore too soon to be able to fully assess the impact of the reintroduction of these sanctions on refugee and migration flows from Iran. However, Iran continues to be a significant source of migrants to the UK. Its economy has suffered from high inflation and a significant decline in the currency value this year.

We are particularly concerned by the continuing systematic discrimination, harassment and targeting of the Baha’i community. The British government supports the UN Special Rapporteur’s assessment that discrimination against the Baha’i community in Iran is legally sanctioned by a lack of constitutional recognition and the absence of other legal protections for adherents of this faith. Though we have not raised specifically the cases of Farajollah Bangaleh and Mitra Badrnejad, we have repeatedly expressed concern at the ongoing incarceration, and the shocking sentencing of Baha'i leaders and the wider community in Iran with the Iranian authorities.
