All private providers of COVID-19 testing services must meet certain minimum standards set by the Government. Providers must complete a declaration stating that their tests meet these standards. If we become aware that a provider is not meeting these standards, we can issue a warning to demonstrate they have rectified their service. Where this is not corrected, we can remove their listing from GOV.UK. Where a provider’s activities pose a potential risk to public safety, we will refer them to the appropriate enforcement body. Where necessary we will support regulatory bodies undertaking further investigation of a provider and support any legal actions or interventions.
If a consumer has not received their test kit, they should contact the provider directly in the first instance. If the problem is not resolved, further information can be found on GOV.UK guidance on consumer rights at the following link:

In England, guidance recommends offering a hepatitis C (HCV) test to patients who received a blood transfusion in the United Kingdom before 1991. In addition, a variety of initiatives and resources have been developed to support healthcare providers, commissioners and others to improve the identification of cases and testing in both the general population and among high-risk groups.
HIV testing was encouraged for those who received blood prior to 1985. All individuals who acquired HIV through blood transfusion prior to 1991 have been diagnosed. Screening for hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been in place since 1972. The risk of acquiring HBV between 1972 and 1991 is extremely small.

On 7 December, pre-departure testing was introduced for all arrivals into England aged over 12 years old, regardless of vaccination status.
Early information suggests that the window between exposure to the virus and infection may be shorter for the Omicron variant. This may increase the efficacy of pre-departure testing as it is more likely to identify positive cases before travel.

We set out our plans for increasing HIV testing across the National Health Service in the HIV Action Plan, which was published on 1 December. The HIV Action Plan sets out actions to achieve the interim target of an 80% reduction in transmissions in England by 2025 and our forthcoming plans to improve support available to people who are lost to care and not currently accessing treatment.

Uniforms, personal protective equipment and special apparel, such as winter uniforms, are provided by the service management providers operating testing sites, according to local needs. COVID-19 testing centres are regularly audited and inspected by the Department, the UK Health Security Agency and by external organisations to maintain working conditions which are safe for test site operatives.

No formal assessment has been made. Currently, the duration of the body’s antibody response to coronavirus remains unknown, and there is no guarantee that an individual cannot transmit the virus to others post-infection. Immune protection may weaken depending on the time elapsed since infection, and antibody tests alone do not indicate when a person was infected. For this reason, recovered status in the National Health Service COVID Pass is acquired through a positive Polymerase Chain Reaction test and not an antibody test.

The National Health Service and the UK Health Security Agency have built a United Kingdom-wide laboratory network with capacity to process 618,000 polymerase chain reaction tests per day. In light of the spread of the Omicron variant, we are increasing this capacity by up to 200,000 tests per day. We expect some of this capacity to be available before Christmas. We have also transitioned to the new Omicron mutation target assay in seven out of 10 laboratories, providing three to four times increased capacity and detection.

Each pharmacy is able to order is almost 2,500 tests every week. Increased ordering limits are available as requested by individual pharmacies as well as providing additional stock on a one-off basis.

Consumers who have been a victim of fraud can make a report directly to Action Fraud, Citizens Advice and the police. Any report received directly to UK Health Security Agency will be reviewed and intelligence will be shared with the appropriate authority.

A nation-wide campaign has been launched to encourage people to test when symptomatic or asymptomatic, wear a face mask and open windows. We continue to provide free lateral flow tests through a variety of channels. We encourage people to test regularly to protect those at risk of serious illness.

We have no current plans to do so. Five out of 10 Lighthouse Laboratories currently have S-gene target failure (SGTF) capacity, representing a coverage of approximately 50 to 60% of the network. However, nine out of 10 laboratories have implemented a genotype reflex assay which offers a much greater specificity of detection for Omicron than SGTF. We are working to rapidly expand coverage of the genotyping assay to up to 100% of our Lighthouse Laboratory network.
