To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, with reference to the Answer of 18 March 2026 to Question 119943 on Journalism: Protection, what assessment her Department has been made of the potential impact of private investigators intimidating journalists on the level of press freedom.
To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, with reference to the Answer of 18 March 2026 to Question 119943 on Journalism: Protection, what assessment her Department has been made of the potential impact of private investigators intimidating journalists on the level of press freedom.
The Government is committed to defending the invaluable role of a free and independent media. Harassment and intimidation of journalists is unacceptable and incompatible with a healthy and functioning democracy.
Through the National Committee for the Safety of Journalists, which brings DCMS together with the Home Office, criminal justice partners, civil society and media organisations, we work to ensure journalists can carry out their work free from threats, intimidation and violence. The Committee's National Action Plan supports efforts to improve the safety of journalists operating in the UK.
The Department also engages regularly with media organisations on current threats facing journalists and developments affecting the media landscape, including allegations of intimidation. Issues shared by the industry help to inform the work of the National Committee.

My Lords, I declare my interest as a councillor in central Bedfordshire. My Lords, the Companion to our proceedings nowadays discourages Back-Bench Members from paying tribute to valedictory and maiden speakers and as a Deputy Speaker I feel obliged to follow the rules, albeit somewhat reluctantly, so I will simply thank my noble friend Lord Shipley for everything that he has done...

My Lords, this has been a welcome and wide-ranging debate, which has enabled many different interpretations of a general debate about local government and electoral reform. The health of our local governance structures is vital to our health of our democracy; the two are inextricably entwined. That is why this...

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what steps her Department is taking with police forces to protect Royal National Lifeboat Institution staff, volunteers and premises from intimidation and harassment.
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what steps her Department is taking with police forces to protect Royal National Lifeboat Institution staff, volunteers and premises from intimidation and harassment.
It is wholly unacceptable for those who put themselves at risk to protect the public to be subjected to harassment or intimidation. Police have a broad range of powers to tackle unlawful behaviour, including harassment and intimidation, and we expect them to take robust action to address it.
