My Lords, it is a great pleasure to follow the noble Lord, Lord Kerr, with whom I used to sit on this committee. We sparred a little; he particularly did not like my suggestion that smoking in the committee should be banned, even when it was on Zoom. But never...

Are the noble Lords sure? They should check where their shirts were made—or perhaps they are Jermyn Street only.
China is belching forth fumes from coal-fired power stations, yet we have the belt and road initiative pouring goods into our country from China. We do not very often hear people saying,...

Actually, I agree with the noble Lord, and thank him for asking, but I do not think it is an either/or; I do not think it is binary. The issue with the Pacific is huge, as is the issue with Europe.

As a farmer, I definitely do not want to do harm to farmers. But I have seen the harm done by the common agricultural policy, which I am sure the noble Lord thinks is marvellous.

I sense a peroration coming, but does my noble friend have the figures for the amount of beef and lamb given as a quota through the European Union, and how much has actually been imported into the UK from the Antipodes?

My Lords, I declare an interest as the owner of a livestock farm in the Midlands. Before I ask my substantive question, I note something that the noble Lord, Lord Purvis, said. I think that sow stalls are still permitted in the European Union; could my noble friend clarify that?

My Lords, it is a pleasure to follow the noble Lord, Lord Whitty, not least because he chairs the sub-committee of which I and several other noble Lords present are members. He chairs it rather well, which sometimes can be irritating because one would like at least to be able...

I hear the noble Lord, Lord Deben, expressing a bit of irritation from a sedentary position, but I recall that Monsieur Barnier said that he wanted to “educate” the British people, which I think is called “teaching them a lesson”. However, people in this House have different views, which is...

To ask Her Majesty's Government what is their current policy regarding trade with Algeria; and what support they provide to companies doing business there.

The UK-Algeria trading relationship was worth £1.9 billion in 2017, an increase of 41.7% on 2016.
The Department for International Trade’s (DIT) team in Algiers provides support to British businesses, assisted by the Africa Trade Services Unit. DIT Algeria organises trade missions for UK businesses, frequently led by my noble Friend Lord Risby, the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Algeria.
UK Export Finance (UKEF) has significant capacity to support UK exports to Algeria, with risk appetite of up to £3bn.
The UK’s trade policy framework with Algeria is currently covered by the EU-Algeria Association Agreement. The Government is seeking continuity for existing EU free trade agreements as we leave the EU and to replicate the effects of existing agreements as far as possible.
