Natural England is working to safeguard the long-term future of red squirrels and natterjack toads by recognising and protecting the Sefton coast as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Special Area of Conservation and international wetland (Ramsar) site. Also by working with the other landowners on the coast, through the Sefton Coast Partnership (SCP), it helps to manage these habitats and species, namely through:
Working with the SCP in the recent production of a nature conservation and biodiversity strategy.
Supporting the Mersey Community Forest with its initiatives to promote woodland to the benefit of red squirrel populations.
Utilising environmental stewardship grants to promote positive management for a wide range of species and habitats.
Providing advice to other landowners on the management of their land for wildlife.
Contributing funding and technical expertise to the North Merseyside Biodiversity Partnership to deliver its local biodiversity action plan. This includes action plans for both the red squirrel and natterjack toad with specific actions to conserve these species.
Contributing funding and technical expertise to the North Merseyside 'Biobank' Local Record Centre which aims to store species distribution records across North Merseyside.
Managing the two national nature reserves (Ainsdale Sand Dunes and Cabin Hill) to support their populations of the red squirrel and natterjack toad.

Areas of land of special scientific interest because of their flora, fauna, geological or physiographical features are notified as sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs). SSSIs in England that include red squirrels or natterjack toads as one of their notified features of special scientific interest are listed below. Other SSSI sites will have populations of these species, but have not been designated for that particular scientific interest.
Although this is a devolved policy issue, the Welsh Assembly Government have advised that in Wales the natterjack toad is present at Talacre Warren, which lies within the Dee Estuary SSSI. This is an introduced population and is not a designated feature of the SSSI. However, the management of the site is currently appropriate for the maintenance of the population.
There are areas in Wales where red squirrels occur. However, there are no SSSIs in Wales specifically designated for this particular species.

The natterjack toad is fully protected in UK law under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended) and Schedule 2 of the Conservation (Natural Habitats, &c.) Regulations 1994. It is also protected in European law under Appendix 2 of the Bern Convention.
On the north-west coast of England, the natterjack toad's key habitats receive additional protection as special areas of conservation (SACs). For example, Morecambe Bay and the Sefton Coast, Ainsdale Sand Dunes and Cabin Hill National Nature Reserves are specifically owned and managed by Natural England to protect the natterjack toad and its sand dune habitats. The Sefton Coast Partnership is currently developing a new nature conservation strategy and biodiversity delivery plan for the whole Sefton Coast: this also reflects the need to conserve natterjack toad populations. There are strict tests for any development which could have adverse impacts on SAC habitats, and Natural England must be consulted in all cases.
Almost all the natterjack toad populations in Cumbria are found within sites of special scientific interest designated under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and this affords a further degree of protection.
The Wealth of Wildlife project was launched on 21 April 2007 as the flagship project of the Cumbria Biodiversity Partnership. Over £860,000 has been provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Rural Regeneration Cumbria and the landfill tax to deliver over three years a range of conservation objectives for rare and threatened species and habitats, including the natterjack toad. The natterjack toad is one of four biodiversity action plan species included in a joint project between Natural England and the Herpetological Conservation Trust.

Natterjack toads are strictly protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended) and Conservation (Natural Habitats, &c.) Regulations 1994. Therefore, the places they use for breeding, resting, sheltering and protection are protected wherever the species occurs, regardless of whether the land has some statutory designation. The areas they are recorded to occupy can be found in the National Biodiversity Gateway (www.searchnbn.net).
The below table lists the sites which are designated as sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs) expressly because of the presence of natterjack toads. In Natural England terms, this means they are a notified interest feature.
