To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, what recent discussions he has had with the Attorney General on the implications of the acquittal of four people charged with criminal damage to a statue of Edward Colston in Bristol for the criminal justice system.
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, what recent discussions he has had with the Attorney General on the implications of the acquittal of four people charged with criminal damage to a statue of Edward Colston in Bristol for the criminal justice system.
In any case where there is an acquittal in the Crown Court, the Attorney General has the power to ask the Court of Appeal for its opinion on a point of law which arose in the case.
The Attorney General is carefully considering whether to make such a referral.
That this House expresses its revulsion and dismay at the recent destruction by vandals of the Police Memorial Trust granite memorial erected in Crumpsall, Manchester, in the memory of Detective Constable Stephen Oake of Poynton in the Macclesfield constituency, who was fatally stabbed by an al-Qaeda terrorist suspect whilst defending colleagues on operational duty with Greater Manchester Police during an anti-terror raid on a flat in Manchester on 14th January 2003; shares in the sense of distress and sadness felt by DC Stephen Oake's family and his many police colleagues, and friends in the village where he lived at this wanton vandalism; and calls on the authorities and the police to do all within their power quickly to apprehend the persons responsible for this mindless and disgraceful act of vandalism and to ensure that they are severely punished.

That this House condemns the appalling desecration of the Jewish cemetery in West Ham, including the destruction of grave stones, the daubing of swastikas and racist graffiti; welcomes the statements of solidarity by leaders of West Ham's multi-faith community with those whose families or community are interred in the cemetery and its rejection of the politics of racial hatred and community division; and calls upon the Government to work with communities, the police service and local government to prevent such attacks against places of sacred or religious significance, which cause such pain and incite fear and division.

That this House recognises the offence caused to local communities by graffiti in their environment; notes the difficulty in removing graffiti without the application of graffiti repellent paint to buildings and street furniture; calls on the Government to give local authorities more powers to insist on anti-graffiti paint being applied to buildings and street furniture owned by private organisations such as telephone companies, bus companies and owners of poster sites; and calls on private organisations to work together with local authorities to ensure that anti-graffiti coatings are applied to public telephone boxes, telephone switching boxes, bus shelters, bus stops and other street furniture.
