That this House is shocked that the Government has served a judicial injunction against the Prison Officers Association and every single prison officer that prevents them from advising, authorising or supporting any form of industrial action that includes even the withdrawal of goodwill and working to the security manual with the threat of imprisonment, fine and seizure of personal assets; and calls upon the Government to immediately enter into constructive dialogue with the Prison Officers Association to end this Draconian measure.

That this House is appalled that the Home Secretary and Director General for Prisons will not enter into pay negotiations with the Prison Officers' Association while knowing full well that the law was disgracefully changed in order to prevent the Association from taking industrial action; furthermore despises a government that changes the law and then uses the changes for its own political advantage; and finds it quite understandable that the Prison Officers' Association has no confidence in the Home Secretary and Mr Derek Lewis, the Director General for Prisons.

That this House deplores the recent attacks made by some honourable Members and the media, particularly Robert Kilroy-Silk's article in the Daily Express on 28th October, on the Prison Officers' Association; condemns the irresponsible rhetoric of those who have pointed the finger at members of the POA, suggesting they are the source of all the nation's penal system grievances and are responsible for the tension and mistrust in prisons, when it is clear that Government policies have led to prison overcrowding, the closing of prison workshops and the cancellation of education classes; notes that the charges of greed and insensitivity are unsubstantial fits of name-calling; and calls on the Government to oppose these scathing attacks and protect the integrity of the members of the POA and their families.
