That this House expresses its concern that the ceremonial bearskin caps worn by members of the armed forces, most notably at the annual Trooping the Colour parade, involve the unnecessary slaughter of black bears; notes that each bearskin ceremonial cap costs the Ministry of Defence over £1,700 and sees no possible excuse for taxpayers’ money to be spent on ceremonial caps made from the skins of bears gunned down for their fur when the overwhelming majority of the British public is opposed to the use of real fur in clothing; understands that the faux fur developed by animal rights charity PETA with leading faux furrier ECOPEL would enable the Ministry of Defence to replace the real bearskins with faux fur; welcomes the offer by ECOPEL to provide the Ministry of Defence with faux fur at no cost until 2030, saving many bears from slaughter and also saving the tax payer up to a million pounds; and calls on the Ministry of Defence to recognise that its continued use of real fur is not in line with the UK Government’s commitment to have and promote the highest standards of animal welfare and that it is time to switch to faux fur for making these ceremonial caps.

That this House notes the ongoing issue that many families around the country face regarding the cost of school uniforms; further notes the findings of The Children’s Society study entitled The Wrong Blazer from 2018 which showed that one million children live in families across England who are getting into debt to meet the rising cost of school uniforms; acknowledges that in many communities secondary school uniforms are being provided by one supplier with the effect that the monopoly on that particular uniform stagnates price competition; is concerned that this has been especially problematic in the past few years with the introduction of academies and other schools causing families to purchase a whole new uniform causing further financial hardship; and calls upon the Government to make school uniforms a non-profit business, so that the price of uniforms can fall and relieve a financial burden to many families across the country.

The Ministry of Defence will undertake full testing of the preferred bidder's proposal for General Service Respirators to ensure that manufacture, testing, supply, performance and quality standards match those of the current in-service equipment. This will include a range of measures to test all hybrid combinations to ensure that Armed Forces personnel are provided with the best equipment that is fit for purpose.
