That this House congratulates The Royal Society of Chemistry on organising the event entitled Science and the General Election at the House on Tuesday 1st March and on its continuing commitment to serve the public interest by seeking to improve the dialogue between the science and engineering community and Parliament; notes that this event will provide scientists and engineers a chance to hear first-hand about the policies for science and engineering of the major political parties; notes that the event is being supported by the UK's leading science organisations including the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Physics, the Institute of Biology, the Science Council, Save British Science, the Biosciences Federation, the Geological Society, the Royal Astronomical Society, and many more; notes that the event is being co-chaired by Lord May, President of the Royal Society, and Lord Broers, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and concluded by Dr Simon F. Campbell FRSC FRS, President of the Royal Society of Chemistry; notes further that the Chief Executive of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Dr David Giachardi CChem FRSC, is presenting a collection of submissions on priorities for a future Government, made by a wide range of science and engineering organisations, entitled Policies for the Next Parliament; and expresses the hope that Science and the General Election will play a constructive part in discussing science issues before the general election.

That this House records the centenary of the foundation of the Faraday Society in 1903, named in honour of the distinguished British scientist, Michael Faraday; notes that among its founding objectives was to provide a pioneering bridge between science and technology and that these horizons were subsequently expanded to encompass science at the interfaces of chemistry, physics and biology; notes that the Faraday Society was subsequently incorporated into the Royal Society of Chemistry whose Faraday Division has continued the proud tradition of Faraday Discussions, which operate on a global basis, and has continued the publishing tradition that saw the original Transactions of the Faraday Society transformed first into the Faraday Transactions and finally into Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics whose international and interdisciplinary record is unequalled; notes that this Faraday Society centenary is being marked by a special publication of 24 scientific papers selected from the last 100 years; notes the special event being held by the Royal Society of Chemistry in conjunction with the Royal Institution on Monday 27th October; and further notes the unrivalled contribution that the study of physical chemistry and the chemical sciences have made and continue to make to our understanding of nature, to the quality of life, and to the knowledge economy of the 21st Century.

That this House observes that there are substantial world-wide market opportunities available to British suppliers of environmental technologies and services in a world market worth $400 billion, which bodes well for the future balance of payments and job creation; notes that the international market is currently dominated by Germany, the USA and Japan, whose governments have developed very supportive policies on research and development funding, export promotion, tax incentives and regulation; believes that it is vital that the British Government encourage British environmental technology and service companies to win a substantial share of these new world markets; and therefore urges all relevant Government departments to develop a comprehensive strategy to support the competitiveness of this exciting new industry, having particular regard to the provision of investment incentives to any company purchasing environmental technologies to control their pollution, as such investment incentives would boost investment, create jobs, boost exports by strengthening the home market for British environmental technology companies, and improve air and water quality and public health.
