[218456] Jane Kennedy: An official from the Department for Work and Pensions represented the UK at the European Social Fund Advisory Committee on 26 September 2003 and 5 December 2003 during the Italian presidency; on 16 March 2004, 13 May 2004 and 18 June 2004 during the Irish presidency; and on 24 September 2004 and 23 November 2004 during the Dutch presidency. All of these meetings were held in Brussels. During the Italian, Irish and Dutch presidencies the Technical Adaption Committee on the Introduction of Measures to Encourage Improvements in the Safety and Health of Workers at Work did not meet. At meetings of the Technical Adaption Committee on the Introduction of Measures to Encourage Improvements in the Safety and Health of Workers at Work, the UK representatives would be drawn from staff with the relevant technical and policy responsibilities within the Health and Safety Executive. There have been three Command Papers produced on prospects for the European Union which include highlights from the presidencies in question--Cm6174 laid in April 2004, Cm6310 laid in September 2004 and Cm6450 laid in February 2005. They are available in the Library and on the FCO website at www.fco.gov.uk/ commandpapers.

[218314] Jane Kennedy: The EU Committee for Implementation of the Action Programme to Promote Gender Equality meets twice a year in Brussels. The last three meetings were held on 11 November 2003 (during the Italian presidency), 20 July 2004 and 15 October 2004 (both of which were in the Dutch presidency). There was no meeting during the Irish presidency. An official from DTI attended the last two meetings in 2004. The Restricted Committee of the Safety and Health Commission for the Mining and Other Extractive Industries met once, in Luxembourg on 3 December 2003, during the Italian presidency of the EU. The Committee did not meet during the Irish and Dutch presidencies. A member of the Health and Safety Executive represented the UK Government at the 3 December 2003 meeting. [194350] Mr. Ivan Lewis: There have been no meetings of the EU Advisory Committee on veterinary training or the EU Advisory Committee on training in architecture during the Greek presidency. A meeting of the committee established under the second general system for the recognition of professional education and training was held on 25 June 2003 at which technical amendments were discussed. The following amendments to Annex C of that directive were adopted in respect of: Germany: change title of "occupational therapist" to "occupational therapist/ergotherapist" Italy: delete the profession of "chiropodist" Austria: insert the profession of "bookkeeper" UK: insert the profession of "listed veterinary nurse". A Commission Decision of 28 January 2004 published these amendments in the Official Journal of the European Union.

[192500] Mr. Gareth Thomas: The Greek presidency of the European Union occupied the first six months of 2003. The CARDS Committee met four times during the Greek presidency: 6 Feb 2003; 26 March 2003; 24 April 2003 and 21 May 2003. All meetings were held in Brussels and the UK was represented by DFID and the United Kingdom Representation in Brussels (UKREP). The CARDS (Community Assistance for Reconstruction, Development, and Stabilisation) Committee oversees the implementation of council regulation 2666/2000 of 5 December 2000, the instrument for Commission assistance for the western Balkans region. The CARDS Management Committee is convened and constituted by member states to assist the Commission with the implementation of the Community's CARDS programme. It operates independently of the presidency. The Committee determines the strategy framework for CARDS and approves annual and multi-annual allocations to country and regional programmes. The detail of the discussions in the Committees are confidential and are covered by the Code of Practice on Access to Government Information, Part II, exemption 2. Under Council Decision 1999/468/EC, the EC is required to publish an annual report on the workings of the Committees.

During that period the TACIS Management Committee met four times: 26 February; 26 March; 23 April; 12 June. All meetings were held in Brussels. The UK was represented by officials from DFID and the United Kingdom Representation in Brussels (UKREP). The TACIS (Technical Assistance to the Commonwealth of Independent States) Management Committee oversees the implementation of Council Regulation (EC, Euratom) No 99/2000 of 29 December 1999. The TACIS Management Committee is convened and constituted for member states to assist the Commission with the implementation of the Community's TACIS programme. It operates independently of the presidency. TACIS is the EC assistance programme to the Newly Independent States of Eastern Europe and Central Asia (NIS). The Committee determines the strategy framework for the TACIS Programme, and approves annual and multi-annual allocations to country and regional programmes The detail of the discussions in the Committees are confidential and are covered by the Code of Practice on Access to Government Information, Part II, exemption 2. [132716] Mr. Morley: The information is as follows: (a) The EU Committee for the adaptation to scientific and technical progress of the Directive on protection of waters against pollution caused by nitrates from agricultural sources; The EU Committee for the adaptation to scientific and technical progress of the Directive on protection of waters against pollution caused by nitrates from agricultural sources did not meet during the Danish Presidency. It met on one occasion during the Greek presidency on 27 March 2003. Issues discussed at the Committee included grassland fertilisation and nitrates, tracing nitrate origin, and updated monitoring guidelines for groundwater and surface waters. (b) The EU Committee on the conservations of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora (habitat); The Habitats Committee (the Committee on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora) met during the Danish Presidency on 20 November 2002 and during the Greek Presidency on 10 March 2003. Issues discussed included the Natura 2000 Network and conservation projects. The devolved administrations, including the Scottish Executive, are kept fully informed of the work of all Committees and their views are fully reflected at Committee meetings. Regarding any preparatory meetings, Exemption two to the Code of Practice on Access to Government Information applies.

[132714] Mr. Morley: The information is as follows: (a) The EU Committee for the adaptation to scientific and technical progress of the Directive on water intended for human consumption The Drinking Water Directive management committee met during the Danish presidency on 26 November 2002 and during the Greek presidency on 8 May 2003. Issues discussed included sampling and monitoring for radioactivity, lead, copper and nickel, and studies on drinking water. (b) The EU Management Committee of the common organisations of agricultural markets for sheep and goats The Management Committee of the common organisations of agricultural markets for sheep and goats met during the Danish presidency on 5 July 2002. It discussed the Implementation of the Council Regulation concerning the community scale for the classification of Ovine animals. The Committee did not meet during the Greek presidency. (c) The EU Committee on the Directive on packaging and packaging waste The EU Committee on the Directive on packaging and packaging waste met during the Danish presidency on 25 July 2002 and during the Greek presidency on 29 January 2003. Issues discussed included data reporting on recycling and recovery of packaging waste, development of the CEN standards on packaging, and notification of Belgium concerning Article 6(6) of Directive 94/62/EC. The devolved Administrations, including the Scottish Executive, are kept fully informed of the work of all Committees and their views are fully reflected at Committee meetings. Regarding any preparatory meetings, Exemption 2 to the Code of Practice on Access to Government Information applies.
