The UK is firmly committed to protecting ethnic and religious minorities in Iraq, and promoting Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB). Through our diplomatic presence, we regularly monitor and raise these issues with the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government, including the situation of missing Yazidi women and children, survivor recovery, and accountability for crimes committed by Daesh. FoRB-specific objectives are threaded throughout our programme work in Iraq, especially following Iraq's recognition as a UK FoRB priority country in October 2025. On Yazidi communities specifically, I refer the Hon Member to the answer provided on 17 March in response to Question HL15070.

We have consistently advocated for an inclusive political transition in Syria and underlined the importance of protecting the rights of all, regardless of religious or ethnic background, both publicly and as part of our engagement with the Syrian Government. I raised this with the Syrian Foreign Minister during his visit to London in November and further pressed the point on the importance of human rights when we spoke last month.
Supporting stabilisation and safe returns of Yazidis to Sinjar, the Yazidi homeland, is a priority for the UK and part of our Freedom of Religion or Belief strategy (FoRB). In July 2025 the former Minister for Human Rights and the UK Special Envoy for FoRB met with Mir Hazem Tahsin Beg, the Prince of the Yazidis. We also raise threats to minority faith communities in regular engagements with the Government of Iraq, the Kurdistan Regional Government, and in multilateral fora. For example, at Iraq's Universal Periodic Review at the UN Human Rights Council in June, we recommended that Iraq upholds the right for minorities to freely practice their religion or belief, without fear of persecution.

The Yazidi community has suffered immense pain and loss as a result of the abhorrent crimes inflicted by Daesh/ISIS. The UK advocated strongly for the passing of the Yazidi Survivors' Law (YSL) in March 2021 and continues to advocate for and fund the work of the Directorate of Yazidi Affairs, which is responsible for securing reparations and justice for survivors. The British Embassy Baghdad has engaged specifically on extending YSL to children born of ISIS sexual violence, lobbying political parties, religious leaders and government stakeholders on the issue. We are working to ensure that after a new Iraqi government is formed, the High Committee of Community Peace will go ahead with planned dialogue aimed towards addressing this issue.

There is a growing body of evidence that Daesh has committed appalling crimes against minority communities in Iraq, including Yezidis, and we are working with our international partners to ensure that those responsible are held to account. On 21 September 2017, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted the UK-drafted Daesh Accountability Resolution 2379, co-sponsored by 46 Member States, including Iraq. The resolution calls for the UN Secretary General to establish an Investigative Team to collect, preserve and store evidence of Daesh crimes, beginning in Iraq. The team will be led by a Special Adviser with a mandate to promote the need to bring Daesh to justice across the globe.
