UK has funded mine action in South Sudan through the Global Mine Action Programme 2 since 2018. To date we have spent over £3 million and have further committed just under £500,000 in financial year 2021/22. Demining work will continue to save lives across the world and as one of the founding signatories to the 1997 Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention and a leading supporter of mine action, we will continue to work towards ending the use of landmines and cluster munitions.

From 2018 until 2020 the UK invested £124 million to help clear deadly explosive devices worldwide through the Global Mine Action Programme 2. In financial year 2018/19 we invested £28.8 million, in 2019/20 we invested £58.2 million and in 2020/21 we invested £37 million.

As one of the founding signatories to the 1997 Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention and a leading supporter of mine action, the UK will also continue to work towards ending the use of landmines and cluster munitions. The UK has now taken on the Presidency of the Convention on Cluster Munitions and will use its leadership role to encourage more states to sign and implement this important treaty.

The Government has allocated £52 million to the HALO Trust between April 2018 and March 2021. This funding has cleared deadly explosive devices so that people across the world need no longer live in fear of one wrong step.

In 2021/22 we will continue funding the HALO Trust to carry out this important work. UK-funded mine action will continue to save lives, limbs and livelihoods, while delivering UK commitments under the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention and the Cluster Munitions Convention.
