That this House notes with concern the distress felt by many United Kingdom armed forces veterans following recent public comments relating to military operations in Afghanistan and the Middle East; recognises that such remarks have reopened trauma and grief for those who served and for the families of the fallen; highlights unequivocally that the service of British troops in war was marked by courage, professionalism and the highest standards of conduct; pays particular tribute to those who lost their lives in service, including Army Medic Channing Day, who was killed while serving in Afghanistan; and emphasises the untainted reputation of the brave men and women who have served, past and present, on the front lines in defence of the United Kingdom and its allies.

That this House notes the 20th anniversary of American missiles landing in Baghdad on the morning of 20 March 2003, which signalled the start of the US-led campaign to topple Saddam Hussein; notes the television address shortly after the bombings by President George Bush, vowing to disarm Iraq and free its people and the subsequent televised address by former Prime Minister Tony Blair confirming British troops were in action in Iraq to disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction; highlights that the attack was ordered two hours after a final 48-hour deadline expired for Saddam Hussein to leave Iraq due to crimes against humanity related to the 1982 killing of 148 Iraqi Shi'a; further highlights and condemns the atrocities committed by Hussein and that these shall not be forgotten; and reaffirms our gratitude and support for our veterans who continue to live with the legacy of their service in their physical and mental health.

That this house urges the UK Government to formally recognise the Daesh atrocities against the Yazidis, Christians and other religious or belief minorities in Syria and Iraq as genocide; understands that it is the long-standing policy of the UK Government not to make determinations of genocide but to leave it for competent courts; notes that on 30 November 2021 a criminal court in Frankfurt, Germany, convicted an Iraqi national for his involvement in genocide, crimes against humanity and other crimes; also notes that on 27 July 2022 the Higher Regional Court of Hamburg convicted German Daesh member Jalda A of aiding and abetting genocide as well as of crimes against humanity and war crimes for the enslavement and abuse of a young Yazidi woman; acknowledges that a criminal court is, in the view of the UK Government, a competent court to make determinations of genocide; and in light of the above renews calls to the UK Government to formally recognise the atrocities committed against the Yazidis, Christians and other religious or belief minorities in Syria and Iraq as genocide.
