Statistics on the number of persons charged with a crime are not centrally collected.Data collected on the Home Office Court Proceedings database for offences under the Forgery Act 1861 are in paper format prior to 2003. As these records need to be manually analysed, sample years have be selected and are shown in the table. The number of convictions under S34 of the Forgery Act 1861 ‘Acknowledge bail in false name' is contained in the table for years 1992, 1997, 2002–04. There were no convictions under S36 of the Act ‘Destroying, injuring, forging or falsifying registers of births, baptisms, marriages, deaths or burials or certified copies'.Paper records prior to 1992 are no longer available.

[208642] Ms Blears: The available information is given in the tables. Tables 1 and 2 give the number of offences recorded by the police in the Essex police force area and the Southend Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) area. Recorded crime data is published on a financial year basis and data at CDRP level is only available for six key offences for 1999-2000 and 2000-01 but for all offences from 2001-02. Tables 3 and 4 give the number of defendants proceeded against and found guilty in the Essex police force area and South East Essex petty sessional area. Court proceedings data is published on a calendar year basis. Data for 2004 will not be available until the autumn. Because recorded crime deals with offences and court proceedings deals with defendants, the two data sets are not directly comparable. Mr. Amess: To ask the Solicitor-General how many (a) fraud, (b) forgery, (c) gun crime, (d) internet crime, (e) robbery, (f) snatch theft and (g) alcohol-related violent offence cases the Crown Prosecution Service has brought in (i) Essex and (ii) England and Wales in each year since 1997; and how many of these resulted in (A) conviction and (B) acquittal. [210455] The Solicitor-General: Gun crime, internet crime and alcohol-related violent offences are offences which cannot be separately identified on the Home Office Court Proceedings Database. Snatch theft is categorised as theft from the person. The table sets out the relevant figures for the other requested categories. The figures relate to persons for whom these sentences were for the principal offences for which they were found guilty. When a defendant has been found guilty of two or more offences it is the offence for which the heaviest penalty is imposed. Where the same disposal is imposed for two or more offences, the offence selected is the offence for which the statutory maximum penalty is the most severe.
