The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) was established under the machinery of Government on 28 June 2007, therefore the response covers its predecessor the Department for Education and Skills (DFES) which was established on 8 June 2001.Accounting records are not available for mileage covered by taxis for both Ministers and Officials.No taxi expenditure has been recorded against Ministers use of taxis within the DCSF's accounting system or its predecessor the DFES. However, the Government Car and Despatch Agency (GCDA) an executive agency of the Department for Transport supplies official cars for Ministers during the course of their official duties. Unfortunately, GCDA are only able to supply data for the latest financial year of 2008-09. Data for earlier years is not readily available and could be obtained only at disproportionate costs.Due to the accounting system used by the Department prior to 2004 only being able to hold a number of charges under one account code of "travel and subsistence" individual charges were not specific to the type of travel.
Expenditure, however, has to be incurred in accordance with the principles of "Managing Public Money" and the Treasury handbook on "regularity and propriety".

In January 1997 there were 60 full-time equivalent teaching assistants in service in local authority maintained schools, city technology colleges and academies in Lewes constituency and 210 in January 2009. The data source is the School Census and the figures are rounded to the nearest 10.

There are 24 open academies in south-east England with a further 13 in development. To date, the amount of funding provided by the Department for Children, Schools and Families for these academies is £613,448,699. This includes the capital costs for new buildings that have been completed or where construction has started. The total funding provided to date by the sponsors of academies in south-east England is £15,228,849.

Information from the Ministry of Justice court proceedings database on the number of parents proceeded against at magistrates courts for offences relating to failing to secure their child's regular school attendance in the Sussex police force area and England, for the years 2001 to 2007 can be viewed in the following table. Prior to 2001 these offences cannot be separately identified.
Court proceedings data for 2008 are planned for publication on 28 January 2010.These data are on the principal offence basis. The figures given in the table on court proceedings relate to persons for whom these offences were the principal offence for which they were dealt with. When a defendant has been found guilty of two or more offences, the offence selected is the one for which the heaviest penalty is imposed. Where the same disposal is imposed for two or more offences, the offence selected is the offence for which the statutory maximum penalty is the most severe.These data are a further breakdown of that published in the Criminal Statistics, Supplementary Volumes for England and Wales for the years 2001 to 2007.Our commitment as set out in the Children's Plan is to reduce the level of persistent absence so that by 2011 no local authority will have more than five per cent of its secondary pupils as persistent absentees. Although the number of prosecutions in Sussex was the same in 2007 as in 2001, there has been an increase of 5,784 prosecutions in England over the same period, which is nearly four times as many than in 2001. This could be attributed to local authorities making more use of their powers to improve attendance in school. Recent years have seen increased use of parental responsibility measures such as parenting orders and parenting contracts as well as prosecutions.

These data relate to 'obstruction, waiting and parking' offences. They do not record parking contraventions in areas when parking has been decriminalised and the police no longer offer fixed penalties. 2007 data should be available next year.

The information is not collected centrally. The best available information is in the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) report 'Police Road Traffic Incidents: A Study of Cases Involving Serious and Fatal Injuries', which covers the period from April 2004 to September 2006. This shows that in that period five officers were prosecuted in connection with alleged offences involving a death and one in connection with an offence that involved the death of an unborn child. Four were convicted. The report sets out the action recommended in respect of other officers involved in collisions involving a fatality or serious injury, including the issuing of advice, formal disciplinary proceedings or other measures. This information is not routinely collected centrally. Research by the Independent Police Complaints Commission looked at police related road traffic incidents that occurred between April 2004 and September 2006 and involved serious or fatal injuries. This found no police officer had been found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving in that period. Five officers were prosecuted in connection with road traffic collisions involving a fatality and one for a collision involving the death of an unborn child. Four were convicted.
