Our science and society programme successfully engages people of all ages and backgrounds with science. It includes 25,000 science, technology, engineering and mathematics ambassadors providing positive role models for students to increase and widen participation in science; the biggest ever Big Bang Fair in March this year; and public dialogue supported through Sciencewise to inform public policy.

The Science Museum Group, which includes the National Railway museum in York, has had its budget cut by a quarter over the last two spending reviews. It does immensely important work in encouraging young people to take an interest in science, leading to careers in science. Will the Minister meet people from the museum to consider how the science and society budget could be used to fund some of their outreach work, especially with young people?

As the hon. Gentleman knows, the science budget has been protected because we absolutely recognise the importance of science and research to the future economy and in encouraging people to take on science. The lead sponsor Department for the Science museum and museums generally is the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and colleagues in DCMS will have been engaging significantly with the Science museum and others. I am sure that the relevant Minister will be very happy to meet—

Science and Research Budget allocations, including funding for engineering research, will have increased from £1.3 billion in 1996-1997 to £3.9 billion in 2010-11. The following table sets out the allocation for each year. It is not possible from the classifications of the Science and Research Budget to provide an overall total for engineering research, however, the table also sets out the allocation for the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for each year.

The Government have not provided any direct national funding to York as a Science City since the role of Science Cities is to bring together existing public investment in science and urban regeneration, and any additional funding is at the discretion of the Science City partners.However, Yorkshire Forward has made the following investments to support York as a science city since 2001:
The University of York, one of the two Science City York principle shareholders, has received nearly £69 million funding between 2002-08 from DIUS and the Higher Education Funding Council through the three rounds of the Science, Research and Investment Fund (SRIF). SRIF's replacement Research Capital Investment Fund (RCIF), which was established in July 2008, will be investing a further £21 m in the University of York during the three years 2008-11.The University of York has also received over £6 million in funding from the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) to boost its knowledge transfer capacity since 2001.

I am sure that there will be a response. I am encouraged by the way in which science cities are flourishing. I had an opportunity at a recent conference, up the road in Newcastle, to meet colleagues from Science City York and others, and I am encouraged by the development and the way in which a range of bodies, such as the learning and skills councils and the regional development agencies—Yorkshire Forward, in my hon. Friend’s case—are coming together to make sure that science cities flourish in the future.

The Department’s primary support for science is through grant in aid to the eight UK research councils. Colleagues will have noted the very good settlement for UK science announced in the Budget yesterday. In 2006, UK research councils funded £17.8 million in research grants to York university. In addition, £35.9 million has been invested jointly with the Department for Education and Skills under the two rounds of the science research investment fund to update and renew university research infrastructure, and £7.8 million has been invested under the higher education innovation fund and its predecessors to facilitate knowledge transfer from science research.

Since 1998 Science City York has secured funding of £3.5 million. The funding sources include the City of York council, European funding. Learning and Skills Council and Yorkshire Forward.The main change since my right hon. Friend asked the same question on 8 June 2006 is the addition of £470,000 to recruit and meet the three-year salary costs (2007 to 2009) and administrative support for the new post of chief executive, Science City York.A further £2.63 million is allocated from Northern Way.

The growth of science has turned round the York economy. When the Conservatives were in power, unemployment in York was twice the national average. It is now well below the national average. My hon. Friend clearly outlines the success of science city York since 1998 and the ability of the city council and the university of York, with the private sector, to harness the world-class potential of business clusters in bioscience, health care, IT and digital creative industries. It is a model that the Government want to support. Three science cities were mentioned in the 2004 pre-Budget report and the 2005 Budget mentioned three more. I am sure that regional development agencies, as a result of the comprehensive spending review in 2007, will be looking to see what the Government intend to do then.

The Government, through the Learning and Skills Council and the regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward, together with additional European funding and resources from the city of York council, have helped to provide just over £3 million to the city of York for investment. A further £2.63 million of Government funding has been allocated through Yorkshire Forward from its ““Northern Way”” project to support the development of York as a science city.

Ms Hewitt: I recently allocated funding to ensure that the Promoting SET for Women Unit will continue to be in existence for another
five years to stimulate progress. I have asked Baroness Greenfield to lead a new high-level group to report with recommendations for
a stronger strategic approach to increase the participation of women in science and engineering. I have also recently published the
report "Maximising Returns to Science and Engineering Careers".

Mr. Bayley: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what steps he is taking to ensure that British scientific research
contributes to economic prosperity. [61312]
Mr. Mandelson: The development and commercial exploitation of scientific research is fundamental to a prosperous knowledge-driven
economy.
Important steps have already been taken such as: £1.4 billion additional funding for science; the launch earlier this year of
University challenge to help universities turn good research into good business; measures to promote collaborative partnerships such
as LINK; the creation, of a £25 million Science Enterprise Challenge announced in my right hon. Friend's the Chancellors Pre-Budget
Statement.
My forthcoming Competitiveness White Paper will address this important issue and build on these measures.
